I saw this on facebook and I thought you’re the right person to ask. If Johanna had lived the chances for Tyrion to grow up in a more loving environment would be better or she would hated him too?
You have come to the right place! This is the only AU that I actually like, and I’ve thought about it a lot! Please click the links:
What if Joanna hadn’t died in childbirth?
What would happen with Tysha?
What would it be like if Joanna were alive? (This was written before TWOIAF)
Further discussion of Joanna, Tyrion, and Tysha
Essentially I think that Tyrion’s life would have been marginally better if Joanna had lived, but Westeros is such an ableist society that growing up as a dwarf would still have been very difficult for him, and I think he still would have faced a lot of prejudice from his own family, even from his mother.
Other people have written about this as well (please click the links):
“I do think Joanna would have objected to the worst aspects of Tywin’s treatment of Tyrion, and Tywin himself would also be somewhat less of an asshole had Joanna survived…but Joanna was not immune to the prejudices and conventions of her time and class.” by @poorquentyn
