When John had ( perhaps shortsightedly ) agreed to walk his neighbor’s dog, Beau, twice a day for the weekend, he should’ve anticipated the current outcome. After all, he’d already witnessed from his apartment window in the mornings before work the enthusiasm with which the German Shepherd greeted the complex’s most recent tenant. He hadn’t properly prepared himself, however, for when the woman rounded the corner: Beau’s eager bounding forward would likely have forced his unsuspecting feet out from beneath him if he hadn’t been as steady on them as he was. Instead, John merely stumbled for a moment prior to catching up with the canine’s newfound speed.
It was still too late to rein Beau back in, though, and a greeting was already being offered to her. “The way you flirt is shameful,” he reproached his companion, but Beau didn’t appear to be paying much attention; already, it was glued to the one who’d initially captured it. Glancing up at her, chagrin suffused the curve of John’s lips. “Sorry, I think he’s pretty fond of you already. But people say dogs are good judges of character, right?” He extended his free hand to her. “I’m John Myers. You’re new here — ?”
