when i'm finallly gonna talk about my feelings but my eyes start to water, voice gets shaky, my throat starts to hurt and all i can say is "i don't know"

“You will burn and you will burn out; you will be healed and come back again.”
— Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov
I need to stop fantasizing about running away to some other life and start figuring out the one I have.
Holly Black; The Darkest Part of the Forest
“Don’t let your struggle become your identity.”
— Unknown
i genuinely really hope you’re happy with who you’re becoming– a little more so every day. i hope you really like yourself.
"Lying is better than you actually being dead." Okay, maybe that's a little insensitive of her, but it doesn't make it any less true. And, yes, she knows herself well enough to know that if she were on the other side of this she wouldn't really know how to feel. Relieved, sure. But what about everything else she'd cycled herself through. If she were one of those people who loves Winn, one of the people being kept in the dark, she's not sure if she'd ever truly be able to forgive him for it.
And if she were him, she'd never forgive her for the things she's making him do now. But she can live with that. She doesn't need his forgiveness, not as long as her decisions manage to keep him breathing.
"You know I can't do that." She says, her exhaustion seeping into her tone. She feels like she's stuck on a merry-go round. Just the same conversation over and over again, to the point that she's lost track of how many times she and Winn have stood in this room and fought the same problem.
"You're right, I don't have anyone else with your brain or your abilities. But neither do they. And there's no way you can do some digging without leaving a trace, they'll figure us out. And I don't know how to protect you from that this time." She barely managed it the last time.
Her phone buzzes again and she is genuinely considering throwing the thing across the room, leaving it to shatter into oblivion and never bother her again. She doesn't even want to go on this stupid overnight with Shaw anymore. She never really did. Something about it has always felt a little off, it's a little too soon to go away together in her opinion. But he seemed sincere and excited, and she's tired of letting people down. So she said yes.
"Better for who?" Not for him, and certainly not for the people who cared about him. He knew that to the CIA it was better, letting everyone think he was dead so that whoever this Ring was would let their guard down. The problem was that while Winn worked for them he knew better than to actually trust the agency. They were always going to have different priorities, different things to consider than Winn did.
"I'm not a damsel in distress, I don't need protection." That wasn't entirely true, and it really wasn't fair either. Sarah was the one who brought him back. She had to feel his heart stop and force it start beating again, and here he was yelling at her for not letting him do something. He knew he sounded like an ungrateful child, but the truth was that he didn't know how to just sit here anymore. His mind kept going back to the barrel, to the day that Mason put him underground and Sarah pulled someone else out. He was terrified, and knew he wasn't going to be the same.
" I know that you're probably kidding, " came alex's half - distracted retort, " but you should know that rabies has almost a one - hundred percent mortality rate in humans. "
"I would get it the rabies shot, I'm not totally crazy." Winn replied, knowing that really it wasn't the best defense. It wasn't like rabies shots in racoons were highly tested. "There's no way I survived Pestilence just to be taken out by rabies."
"I just want to get out of here." He shrugged. "Better to be honest than to lie. My Ma raised me right."
Damien was quiet for a long time before standing to lean against the bars. He hoped what he was about to ask wouldn't cause anymore problems for him. But he needed to know.
"Can I ask you something?" He asked, keeping his voice low so if there were any cameras around, they wouldn't pick up his voice. "There was someone with me. A woman. You guys didn't get her, did you?"
"Honesty goes a long way with us." Honestly Winn wasn't sure what information Alex was truly going to care about. Arson wasn't always their main concern, usually there was something deeper if they were going to get involved in cases like this. But Winn wasn't in the know, not yet anyway.
"No, the only one we picked up from the scene is you. Should we be looking for a woman?"
She smiled as she offered him a smile, "I did mention that I had a friend with me, but I haven't really told him that it's a guy" she admitted. Buck had his own problems that he had to deal with, and she didn't want to add to it by telling him all about how she'd found a friend who also wanted to escape from a bad situation, and it felt wrong to give away Winn's story without his permission. "911 dispatcher" she'd handled her first ever call today and she found that she was able to help without putting anyone else in danger, it had been perfect. "I get to help people without worrying about putting them in danger"
"You should tell him before he shows up. I don't think I could take anyone in a fight, let alone a firefighter." He knew that Buck probably wouldn't come in swinging. Truth was Winn didn't know if Buck knew much about Maddie's situation with Doug, and if he did then he could understand the other's desire to protect his sister. "That's amazing Maddie. You always have been calm in stressful situations." After all, she was the reason they made it here in the first place. "You're going to save so many lives, I'm so proud of you."
"Smart guy. Good to make up your own mind instead of just assuming." Danny replied, grinning over at Winn as he waited for him to take the envelope. "Oh, of course. Silly me." He reached into his pocket and tossed an old looking flip phone at him. "Burner phone. The only number in there is one for me and don't bother trying to use that genius brain of yours to track it. It won't work."
"I like to make my own choices." As much as he could when he lived uder his father's thumb. Winn took the envelope, looking at it for a moment before flipping it open. Danny wasn't lying about a good down payment, and honestly he already knew that he was going to need to take the job. His father bragged about him to whoever these people were, and pissing off his father wasn't exactly something Winn wanted to do. The rest was just a formality. "Almost sounds like a challenege." He replied with a small smirk of his own, catching the phone in his hand as he looked at it. "I haven't run into a single piece of technology I can't track down. Some just take longer than others."
