"If the roles were reversed, if you were in my shoes, would you believe that?" She may not have been the one to physically put Winn in the barrel, but she's certainly one of the people who led him there. His life is something she has to take responsibility for. And she clearly didn't take that seriously enough in the past. She won't be making that mistake again.
"I know that this sucks, okay. I just need a little bit longer to get enough dirt to make an arrest. You trust me, right? So trust that I'm going to make sure you get your life back."
He wouldn't, because he didn't. He had been in her shoes, watched as she took a bullet and he had to figure out how to save them both. It was one of the first days on the job, and maybe the one where he realized maybe she did know what she was talking about. He had been so by the book before that it took both of them almost going down in a fire fight to realize that there was probably more to this job than he thought.
"I was in your shoes, and I know it's not easy to come to terms with." It wasn't his favorite thing to admit, that maybe she was right. Maybe there was enough reason for him to stay hidden. "And if we can't get enough to make an arrest?" Winn knew that right now the only thing they had was his word. The words of a probie were not enough to take down a senior agent, no matter how corrupt they were.
"Well I've had to learn how to remain calm under worse situations, you can't imagine the things I saw as an ER nurse" she admitted with small shrug. As long as she was still able to help, she would feel like she was doing something with her life. She was done allowing Doug to take things from her, and she was excited at the idea of becoming a dispatcher. "Well we can figure out where your skills are the strongest and work from there" after all she was certain that there was a lot of things that Winn could do, it was just a matter of finding the right job for him. "Maybe when I go in for my training this week, I can ask if they have any positions open in the IT department at the call center, I can imagine that it's pretty important they have good techs to keep everything running?"
"I don't know if I want to know the things you saw." He hadn't heard all her stories, but there were a few that he was sure had to be from some sort of fiction, and yet Maddie had lived through and treated the patient. "I won't say no because anything to get back into IT would be great but you also don't need to stick your neck out for me. I know that you're still getting your foot in the door."
That smile... While it was not his usual one, seeing an expression that wasn't rooted solely in his pain over his father made her smile in return as she closed the door behind him. Oh! How she missed that smile... him... their friendship... everything. Kara never did well with awkward silences and was about to break that when Winn spoke up instead.
Nodding, Kara stepped closer and cleared her throat, for she didn't know where this conversation would take them. "I meant every word. I wouldn't lie to you, Winn. I should have said it a long time ago."
Kara never had lied to him. It was one of the things that he loved most about her, that she was always honest. The silence sat in the room longer than it should have, Winn trying to fully process what she was saying. "It's not exactly like I gave you the chance." It wasn't easy to admit, that running meant she had to suffer with this more. Hold onto a truth that she couldn't share because he took the choice away from her.
"I never stopped loving you. But I don't know if I can go back to being the man you fell in love with. I haven't been Winn in a very long time."
âFyodor Dostoevsky, "Crime and Punishment"
Sometimes you just have to sit on the floor for awhile, and hope something feels better when you finally get up.

i hate how being hurt turned me into an avoidant. like i do want you but iâd rather love you from afar and let you be happy.
Makenzie Campbell, from a poem featured in "2 a.m. Thoughts," originally published in 2017

you seem composed, maybe even distant. thereâs a structure to you. people donât always know how to approach you, but they notice you anyway. you donât open up quickly, and thatâs intentional. your softness is protected, not absent. you let people earn their way in.
âIf you have been brutally broken, but still have the courage to be gentle to others then you deserve a love deeper than the ocean itself.â
â Nikita Gill
