He didn’t understand what sort of joke the gods were playing on him, but whatever it was, he didn’t find it humorous in the slightest. Seeing Maribelle all these years later was bad enough, but to be stuck with her on a mission proved to be even more exhausting.
While he had no ill feelings towards her, the constant venomous insults she threw at him did wear him down bit by bit. He understood her hatred for him, for it wasn’t without good reason. Still, it proved to test his patience each time he had to listen to her spout another false truth about him.
“Uh huh, right you are, Twinkles,” he said sarcastically as he replied to yet another one of her quips. He hadn’t been paying attention, not really, so whatever she had said he didn’t quite catch. Throughout the entirety of this trip, he would only agree with whatever she said while simultaneously tuning the yapping noblewoman out.
If only she knew of the sacrifices he made for her, then perhaps she wouldn’t be so scathing towards him, he thought bitterly. But alas, to tell her the truth of what had transpired all those years ago would be foolish, for not only would he jeopardize his own safety but hers as well. He knew that if he were to utter a single word of the truth, their unfortunate past would come back to haunt them both.
And so he remained silent as he half-listened to Maribelle’s ranting. Surely she would tire herself out eventually, and if she didn’t, he’d have to get her to shut up somehow, for entering enemy territory would require them both to keep their mouths shut.
