He carries a big cross, yet his back is unbent. From a partly kneeling position, he mightily struggles to get back on his feet. As his one hand holds the cross, his other hand reaches out to others. He never loses focus as his eyes looks up to heaven, full of faith and hope in God. This is the description of the Black Nazarene, whose feast will be celebrated tomorrow, January 9, 2021. The Philippines has thousands of festivals and celebrations annually. Every January 9th, up to 8 million devotees clog the streets of Manila to celebrate the Feast of the Black Nazarene. Many of them walk the 6.5 km of the procession barefoot, to emulate Christ on his way to Golgotha. A life-size statue of a Christ carrying the cross made of black wood is pulled on a stand from Rizal Park to Quiapo Church. Thousands attempt to climb the stand and touch the statue, believing that it gives miraculous cures and answers prayers.
