'stop number three, lemme hear it for miami!’ laughter tumbled out of duckie as her coach’s assistant shouted outside the hotel. the trio of surfers she was with wasted no time, roasting him as they all walked in together; arguing about who would have to check them in. "come on, somebody else can do it! i have a reservation at the vending machines,” duckie complained, the last word leaving her mouth as she caught sight of the front desk at the person standing at it. something about her presence, the way she held herself or maybe the shine of her smile, made duckie’s heart ache and pulled her right in. “actually, i’ll catch up with you in a sec,” she promised her friends before making her way to the front desk. “sorry about them,” she said, a little bashful through her smile, before nodding to the rest of the surfers as they clambering into the lobby. “i promise we’re not all that bad,” she joked, a glint in her eye. “some of us, maybe.”
