By S David Scott & Casey McFarland
“One of the most impressive changes in some passerine wing shapes occurs after the first complete molt, when the wing becomes longer and more pointed (Perez-Tris and Telleria 2001). Many juvenile passerines have shorter, rounder wings than those of their migratory parents, presumably due to the fact that such a wing design gives more maneuverability. Pointed wings such as those of adult passerines allow faster, more energy-efficient flight and so are thought to be an adaptation for migratory movements (Senar et al 1994). Juveniles are more vulnerable to predators than adults, and avoiding predators apparently may out-weigh migration performance during the first year of life. In old individuals, feather shape of the wing and tail may change as well (Moller and De Lope 1999).”
