O My Favorite Tumblr Librarian/Content Curator (which can be also read as Slash Content Curator, which would be fair), I have one of those brain itches that will. not. leave. and I wonder if it rings a bell for you? I have a memory of reading a fic, I think Check, Please!, in which a male character who is a closeted famous person does something public with the guy he's dating, like a kiss. And there is a meme that's like "This is how you ally, right?" about him. I've searched for 2 hours...o_O

Obviously there’s a more or less infinite variety of ways comments can be frustrating; this one was of the “equating Threetoo’s mental state with that of an infant and insisting that other people should make more choices for him about what does and doesn’t happen to his body” variety, with the frustration-amplifying frame of “scolding fic author for contributing to rape culture by writing a story that grapples explicitly with complicated questions of consent in a universe where none of the central characters have the opportunity to make any choices that are entirely or even mostly free.”

I always kind of think you've written Jean Valjean before (probably with Javert, definitely with some kink that might be religiously tinged). I think it's because he suffers so beautifully and that pairing is so bound up with questions of justice and forgiveness...have you ever been tempted?

I can’t say I have! I have done some reading in Les Mis fandom since the movie--though I had seen the show before! Two or three times!--but it’s mostly Enjolras/Grantaire although I have been known to enjoy a spot of Valjean/Javert. 

I think Les Mis is one of those canons where there is just SO MUCH to know that I don’t dare stick a toe in--even if I was writing, idk, fluffy movie-based modern AU Enjolras/Grantaire, I would feel like I had to not only watch the movie but probably read the book or just generally be well-versed in a lot of things that I am not well-versed in at all (like: correctly pronouncing the names of all the Amis who are not Enjolras, Grantaire, or Marius) and so... no, can’t say I’ve ever been tempted.

Thanks! I love Tony as a neurotic, awkward, emotionally-repressed weirdo, but sometimes it’s nice to write him as someone who is comfortable in his own skin and with his friends, and is the one waiting for someone else to figure their shit out.

Wait, no yes-and? May I ask why? I'm in a playback theatre ensemble and "yes, and" is a byword; I've never heard a counter to it and would love to know yours.

Well, that comes with a lot of caveats. Bear in mind: I had to take acting in college despite being in a design/dramaturgy degree, which is where a lot of my experience with pro-level improv comes from (I was also in a troupe in high school but that was just a bunch of teenagers fucking around). I am not one of Nature’s Improv Masters to begin with and my dislike of yes-and in improv comes from a playwright’s perspective.  

Essentially, to my mind, “yes-and” is a good tool for beginners, and to remind people not to deny the reality of the scene their partner is building. I do agree that you need to work with your scene partner(s) and not shut down various avenues of choice as much as possible. In literary terms, yes-and is important to worldbuilding -- but it’s absolute death to plot.  

Once you’ve achieved a fairly basic level of proficiency, “yes-and” becomes a real hobble to the creation of a narrative. It means you can really only escalate any given scenario, which in itself shuts down a lot of choices. Scenes are more interesting when the level of intensity rises and falls, and too many people use yes-and as an excuse never to let the level fall. Which I get; falling intensity is scary, especially when you’re not used to it. 

Yes-and is often seen as an ironclad rule about all interactions, which prevents people from bringing conflict into a scene -- in yes-and improv, conflict usually has to be either external to the actors or individually internal. You can have actor vs. nature or actor vs. self but actor vs. actor is frequently prevented by yes-and (or, when attempted, sabotaged by yes-and) because people see it as a rule rather than a tool. 

Next time you’re watching scenes, look for the moment when an actor has to consciously decide to yes-and even when “no-but” would be a better choice for storytelling. Or, in a scene, note where you yes-and and ask yourself afterwards what could have happened if you’d said no-but. It might fuck up your improv for a while but it will almost definitely make your storytelling more fun. :D

1. What’s the last television show you’ve seen?

Well, I’m currently (as in while typing this) watching the last episode of Jessica Jones, so...Jessica Jones.

2. Who’s the last fictional character you cried over?

Probably Tony Stark because I’ve been reading almost exclusively Marvel fanfiction for the past while.

3. How many languages do you speak?

I’m fluent in one, conversational-ish in one, and can order from a menu in one (English, Japanese, and French respectively).

4. What’s your least favorite trope?

Probably the ‘man has dubiously consensual sex with woman to get her to be less upset/to change her mind’ trope. There’s a reason I stopped reading most het romance novels.

5. What’s your favorite genre?

Fantasy. I really like urban fantasy especially.

6. If you could have any animal shrunk to the size of a cat, what would it be?

Uh...I don’t know. I’m not really an animal person, but maybe a large bird. Or a large fish. I like fish.

7. What’s one show you watched as a kid you wish they would reboot?

I didn’t actually watch a lot of television as a kid. We had gotten our TV from the World Trade Center, and after those went down we didn’t have anything except for the basic channels, which I really only watched on Saturday mornings (and for like 20 minutes in the morning while I was using a nebulizer, because ah, the good old days, so happy I don’t need that anymore), so I guess the answer is that I don’t really have one.

8. What’s your current obsession?

I’ve been obsessed with the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the past couple of years (like so obsessed I wrote a 12k word paper about it with an 8k word appendix for my big sophomore year research class), so I guess that. I’m actually wearing a Captain America/Bucky Barnes t-shirt right now.

9. How done with school/work are you right at this second?

I finished my last final and my internship today, so in a literal sense, I am done.

10. How bad were my questions?

Not bad.

11. If you could live in any fictional world, which would it be?

Hmm. It’s hard to say, partly because I would pick Harry Potter, but I’ve spent so much time reading meta posts (and talking) about all of the screwed up parts of the world, so maybe Harry Potter once they reform a lot of their laws (which might have happened by 2015).

I MEAN THAT IS ALSO FAIR. tbh if you tally it up for his entire life, he’s probably said Valjean’s name far more than his own considering he spent like 30 goddamn years chasing him. Valjean just looks at him with an expression between shock and fondness and Javert wants to just leave.
