Clef bolts out of bed, hissing in fear as he runs under it. Sona herself falls out of bed, unable to scream but certainly open-mouthed and gasping while clutching her nightgown to keep herself covered.

This is why she likes looking at birds, but not bothering them.

21. THE HORROR: My muse is assaulted/tortured in front of yours as punishment

They weren’t even from the same gang. In fact, Nidalee was from a gang on the far side of town that hadn’t even HEARD of this gang. When she got out, she would have news for Wolf.

She had her head leaned back as her arms and legs were chained up before a pain carved itself into her upper arm; another sliver of flesh was being cut from her body. She cried out, her skin already slick with blood from all the previous wounds, some new, some old. Her back arched to help her cope with the pain, the chains clinking against the floor as she moved. A voice spoke above her.

“One more time that you fail an important task, and you’ll become just like this cat right here.”

She stared at him, her jaw dropping. “...That is-- how did you get that many strawberries?”

// Guuuuurl, I have wanted to draw a design/write up a High Noon AU type thing for ages. But Sona being Sona, her obvious options are… well, obvious. It’s been difficult for me to think up an interesting design and backstory for her that isn’t totally generic, but at the same time I’ve always thought it’s ok for a character to be “normal”. You don’t always have to be a special snowflake, you know?

That said:

Sona works at a saloon and dance hall as an entertainer and general “soiled dove”/saloon girl; serving drinks, performing and dancing with men who pay (ladies could have a dance bought by ticket) - but only rarely, as she prefers to play the songs rather than dance to them.

She’s extremely popular, but few really know anything about her personally. Since she’s mute she can’t hold conversations with people, but she’s known for being a fantastic listener. Sometimes she plays bartender and patiently listens to people’s troubles. Most people say how trustworthy she feels to them and how comfortable she makes them. Sona just enjoys the company. And the extra tips people leave her.

There are some rumors she’s taken money from men to be bedded, but most people agree those rumors were started by jealous “decent women” who think any lady that spends time in places where men mostly go is hardly a lady at all. Anyone who knows Sona with familiarity is quick to defend her honor; though there have been a few drunk guys who left the saloon with a red slap-mark on their cheek after thinking it’d be a good idea to try and confirm said rumor with her.

The tunes she plays are on an upright piano, or “honky tonk” piano as it’s more commonly referred to. She plays very energetically - often dance tunes or generally merry songs, with the occasional emotionally driven piece here and there when the mood allows. Usually at night to help calm the customers down if they get too rowdy. If she wanted to she could have been a fancy professional pianist in the city or something, but no one knows why she’s never pursued that life.

Besides being pretty and generally considered mysterious yet talented, Sona’s also a foreigner. So plenty of people are drawn to her simply by virtue of being an “exotic beauty”. Many who don’t know her assume she doesn’t even understand their language. She does. It’s gotten quite a few people in trouble before from saying things they shouldn’t say. Just because she’s mute doesn’t mean she can’t write and pass a note to the owner.

And yes, being a bar and general hang-out aimed primarily toward working men and “ladies of the night”, she sees and interacts with many unscrupulous types. So long as no one causes trouble it’s usually fine, but there have been a few close calls where a gun fight threatened to break out. One fight was broken up in particular because one of the men said they didn’t want to do something so ugly in front of such a pretty lady. She still doesn’t know how to feel about that to this day, but she usually gives a weird smile when she remembers it.

Yes she can ride horses. She even knows how to tie and throw a lasso. Though why she knows that is anyone’s guess because she won’t tell.

The sudden appearance and question from the Vastayan nearly caused her to fall into the gorge in shock. She stumbled sideways as she spun, and only throwing the rocks on the back of her mantle forward righted her before the tumble. Once her figure was upright and feet splayed for balance, she put a hand over her chest, taking a few deep breaths.

“You nearly scared the sand from my boots!” She finally had a chance to examine her sudden companion, eyes lingering longest on his feet and their inhuman shape. Shurima had its share of beast men, but they weren’t avian like him. Realizing she was staring, the girl shook her head looked back at the gap. “Well, I can help you with it if you’re intent on trying...”
