The first third of Feathertide was wholly dedicated to the protagonists childhood, followed by the beginning of a quest to find her father, which meant by the time I reached the second half of the book, all the plot was being quickly crammed in, leaving me at the end mostly unattached to any of the outcomes. This is the second book I've read this month that had very beautifully creative magic and interesting world-building which was then sadly lost to me by the uncomfortable romance (in this case an awkward love triangle). I wish Beth Cartwright had made this book one or the other, either gone really strictly down the 'finding my father, therefore finding myself' kind of path or the romantic entanglements path. So while I enjoyed the mist and the Scatterings and the strange old man keeping hold of time, I have to say this book is great for people who love purple prose and birds, and not for me.
BOOK REVIEW
Feathertide by Beth Cartwright🧜🏻♀️🌊✨🎐
I got this book from Big Book Box it was the book of the month with the theme of Buried World and it indeed match the theme as this book takes you to an adventure to a magical world unknown to many.
I read this few months back and must say it takes you to a whole lot more fascinating and beautiful journey. I love the storyline, concept, characters a lot especially how beautifully the city of murmurs had been described where there is the jars of swirling mist for fulfilling wishes, mermaids, different kind of people living together and embracing the uniqueness about them.
The story starts with a woman named Leman going to buy fishes realising that the child in her womb loves it she knew the child was going to be unique. After that she gave birth to her daughter and named her Marea in a whorehouse. Many birds came to watch her also the child was indeed unique as she was born with feathers around her body.
The description of whorehouse from Marea's point of view is very creative the way she talks about strangers coming every time to the whorehouse shows the innocence of a child and how strict the owner Sorren is about her lurking in without permission. She spent most of her life in basement with the discovery of her love for feathers and sea. She used to draw birds feathers as she had feathers too. The residents of the brothel used to treat her like a princess and was taught about outside world by a professor Elms who showed her the beauty of nature globe science just in one room .
Marea was well protected by her mother until she discovers the cruelty of society when she accidentally went into the boat of freaks where she saw a boy covered in bear like hair treated as a laughing stock that time she realised she is not beautiful but as per society odd and ugly. The next scene which follows was so heartbreaking as she cut off her feathers with a blade resulting in her getting unconscious and loss of blood. This shows the fixed mindeset of society the their attitude towards someone who are different from their norms.
Later on as Marea grew up at age 17 she went away in search of her father to city of murmurs where her mother met her father there she met a kind women Sybel who has the power to foresee fate of a person. She took care of Marea like a mother and always gives her valuable advice i love her character a lot. In the city Marea encounters many people like Keeper of the hours (short and impactful character), professor Leo, Sybel, Elver the mermaid .
With each characters she shares a different bond as her curiosity regarding her father unfolds bit by bit Marea started to understand and embrace herself more. As the story progresses Marea found her father and left with a choice to enter the world where she belongs. The dilemma left her to think for few days and at the end she made the right choice.
I like Marea and Leo's chemistry as i feel he was more into her than Elver cause Elver was more about herself and her dreams which is not wrong but leaving someone every time without clarification is something which i hate the most. Each and every character possess there own story as well as good and bad side they taught many different things also overall the relationships shown in the book are amazing and convincing i love them all.
I like how the book teaches you about self love , embracing onself and happiness of freedom.
The whole adventure in the city of murmurs is very fascinating and won't let you feel bored at all if you love fantasy books.
This was my first fantasy book and i loved it is worth reading and will recomment this to all fantasy book lovers who believe in magic. ❤❤❤
