Many of the immigrants who arrived in the early 20th century didn't speak English, so signs featured huge facsimiles of shoes, eyeglasses, and even guns to describe what was sold inside. Frank Lava Gunsmith, founded in 1850, was located across the street from what was then Police Headquarters. The John Jovino gun shop opened in 1911 and displayed a similar sign until it closed in 2020. Photo taken on February 4, 1937.

The "Bunny Hug,” first presented by Vernon and Irene Castle in the late 1910s, was revived and revised by Mario and Floria, the dance team appearing at the Iridium Room in the St. Regis on February 4, 1945. At left, Mario and Floria; at right, the Castles. In the heel and toe movement, a rapid step, partners face front for eight counts. The "Bunny Hug" starts with left foot walking eight counts and kick back with bright legs at even balance on the eighth count.
