Blonnndiee’s big night out lol
Day One Hundred Eight
I did not want to go to work this morning because it was really cold outside, and my apartment’s nice and warm.... but, of course, I did. It’s a planned remote day, so students had short, online classes in the morning and teachers had meetings in the afternoon. My students just had to finish up some work and turn it in (current events write-ups for the seniors, Subculture Projects for the freshmen), and I graded it as it came in.
I have some APUSGOV students who aren’t doing their work, which is new and different, and not in a good way. I emailed those students to say we need to discuss this because I don’t want it to continue; I’ll email their parents if things don’t change. And I did email the parents of any ninth graders who didn’t turn in projects (unless they asked for an extension, that’s all good). One dad got back to me almost immediately, thanked me for emailing him, and had his child write me a quick apology and get to work. That’s appreciated.
I had a department meeting around noon that I was antsy to get out of because I hadn’t eaten breakfast, and I was super hungry, and Mr F and I had plans to order burritos from a local place... But I still took the time to crack jokes, as I am wont to do in meetings, when Mrs. Z showed us the reflection questions the administrators wanted us to answer. One asked what leading the way through the pandemic would look like for teachers, and I said, “Either slap a picture of all of us there, or write ‘it’d look like what I see in the mirror.’”
I’m not actually that cocky, but I like to pretend for the laughs.
After that, I got serious about reflecting on the year thus far, the practices I want us to keep in the future and the ones I want us to drop, etc, etc... And then I dashed out, found Mr. F, picked up lunch, and we ate while watching impeachment proceedings.
I did a bit of planning after lunch, then drove over to the main road along with several of my colleagues because some of our sports teams had won state championships today or yesterday, and the tradition is that state champions get a parade (team buses, police and fire escort) through town so folks can celebrate them. That was a great bit of fun.
And you know what? Now it’s February vacation!

Day One Hundred Eight
Mr. F came in with donuts today, which was absolutely awesome because I hadn’t eaten breakfast (I ran out of granola bars and didn’t realize it, thought I had one more). He, Mrs. T, and I had an impromptu morning meeting as we ate, and at one point The Principal dropped by and complimented us on our teamwork.
Go us.
It was Friday before break and it was snowing, so a bunch of my ninth graders were absent, which... is what it is. I know a lot of parents excused their kids because they’re used to thinking that nothing gets done on days before vacations. But in high school? No one has time to waste a day.
Or, at least, I don’t.
It was a B day in the schedule, so my students did the same thing my other students did yesterday: took a quiz and learned about the fight against ISIS. I thought it went quite well overall; students could work at their own pace, and it was chill and quiet since they were all watching videos with headphones in for part of the block, and reading for the rest of it. A couple of the boys did decide to start making Google Translate say insulting things in Arabic, but I put a stop to that quickly by offering to teach them a handful of polite things, then redirecting them.
The quiz grades were a bit low, so we’ll be revisiting study skills in the not so distant future. I’ll figure out how I want to do that later. For now? It’s vacation!
And, no, it’s not just a long weekend for President’s Day; I have an entire week off. February break is unique to New England, and done entirely for the benefit of the ski industry, but I’m not complaining about it!
