It’s day 26 of the #loversvinylchallenge hosted by @djpennylane and @captain_dan75: Love Triangle - An Album By A Group With Only Three Members. An Evening With Ornette Coleman Part 2 (ORG Music, 2018) This @recordstoredayus 2018 release features a concert from 1965, recorded in Croydon, England. Ornette is joined by David Izenzon (bass) and Charles Moffatt (percussion) for a typically uncompromising set of free jazz. That’s not to say there isn’t a lot of play, wit, and melody in the music, it’s just that it might be put together in unusual ways. The sound is VERY thin, however, so it ends up sounding a bit like a duet between Ornette and Moffatt. It’s day 25 of the #loversvinylchallenge hosted by @djpennylane and @captain_dan75: Morticia & Gomez - Creepy Cover. Legionaire’s Disease Band - I’d Rather See You Dead (Than With Wool On Your Head) b/w Downtown (Lunar Lab, 1979) I always though this was super-creepy, ghoulish even, made even more so by this poorly printed later pressing. That feeling that you’re seeing something you shouldn’t be seeing - someone’s family member in an open casket - is powerful. It’s day 24 of the #loversvinylchallenge hosted by @djpennylane and @captain_dan75: Love Poem - An Album With Great Lyrics. Various Artists - The Harder They Come (Mango, 1972/79) Every song here - but especially the Jimmy Cliff tracks - has lyrics that seem to speak directly to the heart and soul, either with the language of joy or of sorrow. When I saw the movie for the first of many viewings the songs seemed to instantly bond with my very being. Oddly enough, nothing else Jimmy Cliff did really moved me that much, which makes his work here even more special. It’s day 23 of the #loversvinylchallenge hosted by @djpennylane and @captain_dan75: Forbidden Love - A Guilty Pleasure. Various Artists - Hit Machine (K-Tel, 1976) I’m not guilty but do recognize the whiff of nostalgia that accompanies my pleasure in these compilations, which replicate the state of AM radio during my childhood. The eclecticism that had Frankie Valli rubbing shoulders with War and K.C. It’s day 21 of the #loversvinylchallenge hosted by @djpennylane and @captain_dan75: I Love Rock & Roll - Share A Heavy Metal Or Hair Metal Album. Led Zeppelin - Presence (Swan Song, 1976/78?) Metallica is my favorite metal band and I don’t have any of their stuff on vinyl. I though I had a copy of Ratt’s Round And Round, which would have satisfied the “hair metal” requirement, but I can’t find it. It’s a great song, so please give it back to me if you have it! Now, Led Zep had some great hair and could get rather heavy, but were neither hair metal or heavy metal, really. It’s day 20 of the #loversvinylchallenge hosted by @djpennylane and @captain_dan75: Heartbreaker - A Breakup or Sad Album. Iggy And The Stooges - Metallic KO (Skydog, 1976) A breakup album of a different kind with side two featuring the second half of the last-ever Iggy And The Stooges concert. At least until the victory-lap/cash-grab reformation in 2003, that is! I’m forever grateful to my friend Marc who safely advised me to spend a little extra and get an original pressing instead of the cheap copies with the blue cover that were flooding the market at the time. It’s day 19 of the #loversvinylchallenge hosted by @djpennylane and @captain_dan75: Happily Ever After - Last Album By An Artist Or Band. The Yardbirds - Little Games (Epic, 1967) Sure there was Box Of Frogs and other latter-day contrails from the fascinating discography of The Yardbirds, but this was the real final vinyl from the band. A bit of a mixed bag, it finds the band - with Jimmy Page taking more control - chafing against producer Mickie Most’s poptastic vision. Still, there were some great songs, like White Summer, Only The Black Rose, and Glimpses, among others.
