*** I'm participating in a writing challenge for the month of February and since I don't have a blog this is the platform along with Instagram that I will be using**** It's three thirty in the afternoon and the dj on the radio has yet to play my favorite song. I spent the last dollar of my allowance on this 60 minute tape and if Ed Lover would stop talking maybe he'd play my song. "Girl, he's not gonna play that song you've been waiting for hours ( one hour exactly...) let's go outside and play double Dutch" "Just five more minutes and I know he's gonna play it" "and the next joint up is for the ladies, here's Tevin Campbell's "I'm ready" here on hot97" We all squealed and I pressed record. We all sang off key but I sang the loudest because Tevin Campbell is my man. My walls were adorned with his posters from WordUp! Magazines that I stole from supermarket trips with my grandma. I was going to be Mrs Tevin Campbell, forget Ashley Banks! That tape was played in my Walkman back and forth to school. I rewound that tape over and over and I even listened to it with you. The you that I smiled to during the morning announcements. The you, who I always chased after in freeze tag, the you who would trade your whole milk for my chocolate during lunch, the you that I got my hair straightened by the hot comb every night just to look pretty, the you that I crushed on since 4th grade. I finally have the courage to give you a letter and I'm anxiously waiting your reply. I'm here playing double Dutch watching you show your friends my note, what is taking you so long? "Did you give him the note?" "Yes" " what did he say? What did he say!" "I'm still waiting" "Oh oh oh here he comes" You looked so cute in your denim overalls, Nikes with the pump, and hi-top fade like Kid from KidNPlay "Here, see you back in class" "Ok" I take a deep breath and see the answer to the question that's been bothering me for weeks now The note simply read: Do you like me check one. You had three choices and you chose Yes. Sorry Tevin Campbell, Omar is my man now.
