Grain mites and eggs in a hound dog fecal
Grain mites live in animal feed. While they don't typically cause disease, in some animals (like our hound patient) they can trigger allergic reactions.
To decrease the risk of grain mites infesting your animals' feed:
- Routinely clean the feed storage area with hot, soapy water.
- Store feed in tightly sealed containers.
- Keep the feed area well-ventilated with as low humidity as possible.
- Avoid buying feed in damaged containers.
- Avoid buying damp feed.
Use of pesticides to control grain mites isn't recommended due to the risk of accidentally contaminating the feed.
