ICE watchers in Maine say they were threatened by federal agents

Community members have been monitoring the activity of immigration agents in Greater Portland.

Looks like one of our siblings to the north is gonna get the firehose of ICE shit now too (whether it's actually good that that Temu Himmler Bovino is apparently being made the fall guy for their PR problems and replaced by Tom "Cava Bag" Homan in MN remains to be seen, but at least we've been promised "fewer" slave catchers ICE agents, I guess? Which could mean anything, technically "fewer" ICE agents are here now that they've hustled Pretti's death squad out of state)

To our friends in Maine, a few suggestions:

Low-tech is best. Set up your neighborhood watches and legal observer trainings in-person as much as you can. Do not, under any circumstances, use social media to do it or Google Docs. They happily cooperate with "law" enforcement every chance they get.

Use secure platforms for necessary communications. If you think you could be arrested while observing/filming, disable biometrics on your phone and use an alphanumeric passcode instead (law enforcement needs a warrant for password protection, but for biometrics they can make you open it) For legal rights and protections information for YOUR area, a great resource is your local National Lawyer's Guild Chapter (you may be familiar with their work from those snappy "shut the fuck up!" PSAs they did)

Keep mutual aid and legal observation separate. The article up top shows that ICE is already doing in Maine what they learned to do here, follow people they've seen before hoping they lead them to migrants. Pick one lane or the other and if you're doing food/school runs, stay under the radar.

It is shitty as fuck to say this, because I do believe the vast majority of people want to help, but have a high index of suspicion for people who want to join your local groups unless they are WELL known to you and can be vouched for by trustworthy individuals. ICE has a known history of lying to get into schools pretending to be social services, and there are multiple first-hand accounts on Reddit and Bluesky of ICE agents attempting to infiltrate parent groups to bring aid to families, presumably so they could steal more little ones like Liam to use against their families to lure them out. As always, do not trust people suggesting destruction of property or violent acts in easily subpoena-able contexts. There's a REASON Republicans are always wittering on about paid agitators, it's because they use them all the fucking time. Don't be a rube for the likes of Cam fucking Higby or Nick Shirley.

Do NOT do this work alone. It's not foolproof obviously, as the many witnesses to ICE violence and murder attest, but you are much, much safer with witnesses to draw attention to what's happening. There are a LOT more of us then there are of them. The more aware of that they are, the better.

Be ready to do whatever you need to do to draw eyes and cause distraction. You-all are familiar with cold already but just so you know, air horns do NOT work below freezing but the good old fashioned whistle does, as do marching band instruments and car alarms. I'm sure Maine has some secret special sauce too to draw eyes and ears that's local to you and you should use the fuck out of it, whatever it is.

ESPECIALLY If you plan to be an observer, take a self-defense class - not saying you will for sure need it, the majority of observers here have been able to keep themselves out of physical danger, but in the non-zero chance things do get physical, knowing how to fall and guard vulnerable parts of your body if you get attacked and/or detained is valuable information.

Maybe if you'd stop sniffing your own farts for five fucking seconds and stopped treating the deaths of thousands of innocents like a fucking Steven Universe cartoon we and everyone in Gaza could be living in the perfect fucking utopia but instead we live in a goddamn dystopia beyond repair.
