In the light of the beacons
This little piece of post 6x06 fluff goes out to all the gifmakers, particulary @owlsie-hoot and @my-little-random-world, for all their hard work over the past 6 weeks!
Gradually, the gathering around the beacon diminished. Tris and Charlotte left, arms around each other. James hauled a protesting Jimmy off home to bed.
Siegfried watched Mrs Hall watching the fire, the dancing flames flickering shadows over her face.
“Why don’t we sit?” he murmured, and drew her to a comfy looking patch of grass on the edge of the hill, where they sat on the slope, their own beacon behind them and the fires over the distant hills in front of them.
Mrs Hall stared out across the distance for long, quiet minutes. Siegfried was content to sit in the silence. There didn’t seem to be any need to rush, any more.
“I were proud of you today,” she said eventually, and turned towards him, moving imperceptibly closer so that their shoulders brushed. “With Tristan.”
She smiled at him and the fire cast sparkles in her eyes.
“And I,” he said, after a moment, the words catching in his throat, “meant every word that I said to you today.”
He was close enough to her to hear her breath hitch. And then she brought one gentle hand to his face, cupped his cheek, stroked her thumb gently over his skin.
She was luminescent in this light. He leant into her touch, wanting.
“Audrey,” he said quietly and her thumb stilled, “you are the light of my life.” He held her eyes with his and in the red and gold and orange, he read her feelings for him, written clear. He cleared his throat. “If… if I might be so bold…” he trailed off. He’d never been good with words and these ones were momentous. But he didn’t need to say them. She read him, as she so often had.
“Siegfried,” she whispered, and then she closed the tiny gap between them, brushed her lips carefully, searingly, over his.
She drew away, not far, still close enough that he fancied he could feel the flicker of her eyelashes on his skin.
“I love you,” he said, opening himself up completely and offering himself to her.
She laughed, a quiet, beautiful sound. “I love you too.”
He put his arms around her then, held her close, and she sighed. “This is perfect.”
“You are perfect,” he replied.
She lifted her face to his. “Kiss me again?”
He chuckled. This time he cupped her cheek, learning the feel of her skin. When he pressed his lips to hers she was trembling and he held her tightly, kissing her with everything he had.
“I never want this night to end,” she said quietly when he finally drew away.
He twisted his fingers into her curls, luxuriating in them. “But when it does, the rest of our life will begin.”
