my strong opinion is that old fei the tenth went through some amazing character development.

I think that all characters in qjj, are doing things out of interest and the motivitations are different for each of them. They are all going for money, power, and status . People in power are so greedy for those 3 things that they opress the others and the only way to escape it is by also going for status, money and power. It is hard to survive or do anything without it in this country, so people go after these for self preservation, preserving others, fixing corruption, even peacefulness, freedom, wanting validation from family, jealousy, serving their country.

The atmosphere is also such that the kings until Shen Zechuan became the king, were not able to keep everything in check and everything was such that the noble clans were corrupted and common people suffering. So basically this is about fixing systemic corruption and how it influences people, and even though sometimes characters have similar motivations, they different by behaviour and the role(bandit, minister, eunuch). So they still feel different. A true masterpiece!

As Fei Sheng’s n1 girlie, Yin Chang’s death while Fei Sheng slams his bloody fists against the doors and begs to open the gates was honestly terrible. Beautifully written, yes, but so painful😭
