Okay, so I think Keira has been butch from day 1, just straight out of the womb. And she looks exactly the way Keith does in canon. Allura briefly mistook her for a boy at first before apologizing and saying she wasn’t accustomed to Earthling gender norms yet. She’s super rugged and outdoorsy, wearing army jackets, tank tops, combat boots, beaten-up Blundstones, cargo pants and patchwork clothing. She still has those fingerless gloves because they were her dad’s, and she has that same fuckass mullet. Basically, back in all those foster homes, she was forcibly dolled up and stuff, which she hated, and her hair was usually grown out long, sometimes with ribbons in it. And when she got to the Garrison and needed a haircut, Shiro offered to do it, but had to leave at the last minute, and Keira got impatient and cut it herself. Shiro was shocked, and she got strange looks from students and staff alike, but she liked it. She kept cutting her hair that way in the desert because it usually deterred male attention and also because it gave her a sense of agency over her hair that she didn’t have before. She also slings a carabiner on her belt and keeps her nails short to attract female attention. So Jane grew up in high society, which is very strictly gendered. She was often forced into stuffy dresses for all the cotillions they attended, and not allowed to participate in fencing competitions like her older brother, despite wanting to so badly. And at the Garrison, she followed all the trends her friends seemed to adore, so she could fit in. But those outfits never really felt like her for some reason. So, when her parents cut her off financially for disobeying (it makes sense in context), one of the first acts of rebellion she did was to fund fencing classes for herself. And it was awesome. Not only did she have a natural talent for it, but the activity also provided some much-needed stress relief. Okay, so her family cuts off contact during the war, and between being on the frontlines of a war and the stress of not knowing if her family is okay or not, she snaps. Like in the middle of putting on her helmet, she gets tired of trying to fit all her hair in, so in a fit of rage, she cuts it off and only really registers what she’s done after the fact. The MFEs find her and help her tame the look into something almost presentable. Post-war, after she’s gotten some much-needed therapy and accepted herself as bisexual, she dresses pretty masc. She decides to keep her hair short because it feels like her, and she sports the same hairstyle that James does in the show. Her style of dress is very fancy, though, very rich, preppy, boy-next-door. Like, she’ll wear polos and khakis and army jackets and denim jackets and expensive watches and sneakers and ironic baseball caps. And she’ll accessorize with pearl jewelry and plain necklaces and a single earring. Where Keira’s look is very rugged and outdoorsy, Jane’s is very smart and put together. She wears clear lip balm because she doesn’t want her lips to get chapped, and also a carabiner on her hip, and rows and rows of friendship bracelets on her wrist. She’s a soft butch and finally proud of it.

Keira moved around a lot, from foster home to foster home, but she ended up at Jane’s school around three months before joining the Garrison. And at first Jane tried really hard to befriend her, but she was super gruff and rude because of *gestures vaguely at her whole life* so Jane ended up starting to hate her a little bit

Jane also always felt this weird feeling twisting in her stomach whenever she was around Keira, but she had no idea what that was about. Probably it was because the new kid was starting to give her the heebie jeebies

Cut to the Garrison, Keira wants to get in because of canon reasons, and Jane wants to get in because she knows there won’t be many options for her if she follows her family’s path. She knows they would never approve, so her plan is not to tell them until she passes the entrance exam, because then they’ll have no choice but to let her

The problem is that Keira shows off during the entrance exam and gets them all in trouble, and at that point, Jane is both extremely worried about what will happen when her parents find out and also sick and tired of Keira not being a team player. She taunts Keira just like in the show, and then gets decked. Her instincts from tussling with her siblings kick in, and she manages to hold her own until the Garrison staff forcibly pry Keira off

Jane doesn’t get a couple of hits in later like her male counterpart, but she does gain a lot of sympathy from the other students and the staff from this event, which basically turns the whole school against Keira before she even starts attending, and gets Jane a lot of support. Her parents are shocked and angered when they find out Jane secretly tried out for the Garrison, but when they see she passed with flying colours, they let her go, thinking that it’s a phase that she’ll eventually grow out of

Jane is very extroverted and likable, so she’s put near the very top of the social ladder, and Keira falls near the very last rung. This means that one of the ways Jane has to maintain her status is by picking on Keira. She does, gleefully. She wears rubber bands on her wrist in case she needs to tie her hair up while studying, and she flings them at the back of Keira’s head sometimes, then feigns innocence. She and her friends are always spreading rumours about her, excluding her or giggling at her from their lunch table. And Jane does all this because it helps bury that funny feeling in her stomach. That feeling she gets whenever Keira’s eyes catch the light and she sees all the flecks of purple in them, or on that rare occasion, Keira cracks a smile

It certainly felt better than when they were in the training simulator, and no matter what Jane did, Keira always managed to best her in terms of piloting skills. She studied hard to keep her parents from forcibly pulling her from the school, studied hard in order to beat out her other classmates, and hoped to graduate with honours, because she would never expect anything less from herself. But no matter what she did, she was always second place to Keira

Just as confusing was the attention Keira gave her in the sim. She figured out long back that she could never beat Jane in her homecourt- the Garrison social scene- but the training sim was her homecourt, and Keira enjoyed trouncing Jane in training drills and gliding past her with ease to show her up in front of the teachers, and to get on her last nerve

It goes without saying that this infuriated Jane. Even more infuriating to her was the awe fluttering in her chest when Keira outflew them all, the rapid warming of her cheeks when Keira flashed her a crooked grin before absolutely trouncing her in a drill

And Jane bugged Keira to no end, but Keira would also be lying if she said she didnt have a sneaking suspicion about where that urge came from...

Once, Jane and her friends were touching up their makeup in the girls’ washroom one day, and all of a sudden, one of them joked that they’re glad Keira isn’t in here. And Jane cracks a smile and replies in agreement because she would probably stink up the whole place with how much sweat and grime she’s constantly covered in, and her friend cackles and says that no, it’s because Keira’s a lesbian. And Jane’s eyes widen, and she freezes, before looking over to that friend with a croak of “What?”

“You see it, don’t you? She hates dressing up, and she acts just like a boy, and she’s always hanging out with… with Professor Shirogane…” She says that last part between giggles, eyes alight with mischief, like she knows something Jane doesn’t.

“What… What’s wrong with Professor Shirogane?” Jane forces out of her throat because she’s looked up to and admired Shiro since the pilot first came to her class all those years ago. Part of why she resents Keira so much is that Shiro seems to love her so much.

“Oh, honey, you didn’t know? Shiro’s gay.”

And they pull something up on their phone to prove this- maybe a video she did for It Gets Better. And Jane’s still reeling from the fact that she managed to miss something so blatantly obvious, and the fact that maybe Keira’s tomboyish tendencies and fuckass mullet did lead to the obvious conclusion that she was a lesbian, and maybe there was something going on between Shiro and Keira that she hadn’t even noticed…

So naturally, this turns into a giant rumour that Shiro was using Keira (poor girl), and Jane is reluctant to participate at first, but then she’s hit with “Why are you being so stingy about this?” in that tone that clearly warns, Say the wrong thing, and we’ll think you’re gay too.

So Jane- who sometimes felt her heart skip a beat when she spotted Keira furiously scribbling in her book before class, or felt her eyes subconsciously flicking to Patience’s lips once when she put on lip gloss because they looked so soft and shiny, or sometimes catches herself looking at girls the same way she looks at guys- steels herself and joins in.

Her voice isn’t the quietest, because seeming the least willing might tick someone off. Nor is it the loudest, because that would also warrant unwanted attention. It slips seamlessly into a sea of scandalized whispers and giggles- invisible, like Jane wants to be

And Keira hears those rumours (the ones about her being a lesbian, not the Shiro thing). And the thing is, they’re not wrong about that. Keira’s always known she was an outcast, a misfit compared to the other people her age. And the first time Shiro called herself a butch lesbian and explained what it was, Keira’s heart skipped a beat as she thought Oh. There’s a word for me. She doesn’t think they’re necessarily wrong, because sometimes she catches herself in awe of Babe Garrett’s laugh or the way Leah McClain looks in lip gloss or even the cute, focused look Jane Griffin gets while studying. So ultimately, she’s not entirely bothered by that rumour; she’s just sick of people talking about her

Eventually, Shiro goes to space, and Keira punches Iverson and gets expelled. Jane is in shock about this, because at this point, even while they were never close, Keira has been a constant in Jane’s life since forever now, so it’s hard to imagine it without her. She starts having regrets about the way she treated her

Another, less angsty headcanon:

Jane is obsessed with peach-flavoured everything. Peach-flavoured lip balm, lip gloss, peach lemonade, peach rings. Post-war, when they finally start dating, Jane is obsessed with peach-flavouring, and Keira is obsessed with the taste of it on Jane’s lips.
