Hey Wayfaring! It's me again😅 I wanted to ask, do you think medical school is really hard or not that much? I've seen posts saying med students don't sleep or have social lives. But is that true? I like biology & I find the human body interesting so it shouldn't be that hard then right? I'm also a quite good student. Also do you think it makes a lot of difference in which university you study? (In regards of for example finding a job when you're done studying). Thanks for your time^^

MED SCHOOL IS HARD.

I have a whole tag for it. I get this question every so often because people don’t believe it could be that hard. It doesn’t matter if you love anatomy or are good at biology. Most people who go to med school have those qualities. It’s still hard. You are thrown a TON of information all at once. At a slower pace it would be easier, but that’s not possible. It’s terribly difficult. 

You are studying ALL the time. There’s no cramming in med school. That means there’s nowhere near as much time as there was in undergrad for social occasions. They are still possible, but they have to be carefully planned for. 

I don’t think the school you go to matters all that much for medical school, other than being US vs. foreign. There are certainly some schools that are ranked higher than others, but you can get just as good education at a small school as you can at the prestigious ones. Sometimes the big names matter if you’re going into a really competitive specialty, but in reality your individual stats matter much more.

Hey! Do you think being a paramedic is harder/more stressful than being a nurse? Do you think nurses earn more than paramedics or is it the same or the other way around? I'm 14 and for the rest of my high school education I'm studying the subjects from the profile 'nature and health', which means when I go to university I'm gonna have to study something related to medicine. I'm not very sure yet what I want to be between doctor, nurse, paramedic, veterinarian, etc. so. Thanks for your help!

Hi, this is a tough one because 1. nurses work in many many specialist areas and 2. the word “hard” is very subjective. I believe that paramedics have a more difficult and stressful work environment than some nurses, however those working in emergency, surgery, ICU, paeds, acute care etc. often deal with the same type of patients that we do. That being said we face different challenges in the workplace so I don’t think you can exclusively say paramedics have it harder than them.  In some places, paramedics and nurses earn roughly the same amount, while in others paramedics earn very little. To find out for your country you’ll need to google the median wage of nurses, then do the same for paramedics. 

I think it’s great that you’re interested in health care, and to help you find out you may be able to do some work experience or volunteer work in first aid/paramedicine/vet care. That being said, it’s also important to make sure you have balance (if you’re able to) in your study because honestly, over time your passion and interests may change. Good luck!

Do you have any advice on how to get better/more confident when describing laughter when writing? I just find it so hard because in real life people laugh in lots of different ways, sometimes they laugh like inside and not really opening their mouth, sometimes they laugh while only slightly smiling, sometimes the laugh is like a sigh, others is a loud, contagious laugh that obviously can't be held in. I try to describe laughter but I feel like it might sound weird:/ idk tips? Advice? Thanks;D

But seriously, part the challenge is being able to differentiate between different ways of laughing, which you’ve already started to do beautifully. One detail to remember is that laughter doesn’t just affect our mouths. We scrunch our noses, we close our eyes, we hunch over or use our hands to hide our faces, and sometimes we even cry. Sometimes it even hurts our stomachs, or our cheeks, or our shoulders. Laughing can involve our whole bodies if the situation is funny enough.

The best thing to do is watch and listen to other people laugh and make observations. When you’re interacting with someone, and they laugh, and you notice a mannerism you’ve never noticed before - a sound they make or body language that seems different - grab a scratch of paper and jot it down. Stuff it in your pocket and then add it a more permanent notebook later. 

Being a writer starts with being a great observer, and having an excellent imagination. So you start by having lots of instances in mind to reference when it comes to describing it. 

But phrasing a description, laughter or otherwise, just takes practice. Start by just writing exactly what you see. “He covered his mouth, his shoulders shaking, and his eyes closed tightly like he was holding back tears.” <<< This isn’t necessarily great writing, but I’m describing a clear image that you as a reader can immediately picture. 

Anything that’s difficult to describe starts by just being literal. Write exactly what it is. If you keep writing, keep practicing, then maybe a few months down the road when you go back to write that same moment of laughter, you’ll have the tools to add some more oomph to it, making it a little more lyrical and vivid. 

Be patient with yourself. The ability to write clear, concise, and vivid prose takes time to improve and master.

there’s no snow right now, but we had snow in novemeber so who knows! no one ever knows. pack for cold anyway.

ps: while i’m very flattered, ‘jeg elsker deg’ in norway is mostly reserved for romantic partners and close family members. ‘jeg er glad i deg’ can be used, but might also make people you aren’t close with uncomfortable. love in general makes norwegians uncomfortable, i think. thanks anyway!

In dinner my aunt pointed out some red lines on the skin of my cousin's upper arm so I'm curious about what could it be? Any idea? They kinda look like stretch marks but way thinner and red-colored. But why would my cousin have stretch marks if he's like 19 and he's not overweight? I'm wondering that. Thanks for reading!

You can have stretch marks and not be overweight. It’s very common. Stretch marks just happen when someone grows quickly. A lot of tall, skinny, teenage boys get stretch marks after having a growth spurt and growing 4 inches in a summer. Stretch marks can be thick or thin, red, purple, or flesh-colored. Without seeing the marks, I can’t say what they really are, but you can’t rule out stretch marks just because someone is thin.
