he’d never thought it was personal, truth be told, and he understands. balfour isn’t completely eager to get... invested in this, or whatever you’d want to call it. if they remain awkward and little more than civil and respectful of each other throughout this marriage, well, that wouldn’t be the end of the world. ( maybe in a few years he’ll change his mind, but for now he’s guarding himself against letting anybody else in. ) 

he’s not even fully sure why he brought it up, actually. maybe just to prove to her that he isn’t entirely unkind and opportunistic, even if he’s distant. there might just be a good man hidden beneath all of this... balfour. 

     ‘ take all the time you need, ’ he says, and bows his head for a moment. he isn’t here to make her life difficult, or miserable, or any other such nonsense. he could’ve balked at the idea of the title of king being kept from him-- but power is power is power, and this is enough. balfour is content to simply be in this position, and expect nothing more from her. they can rule, and they can live their lives, and they can be just like business partners, for all it matters.

now this was a surprise -- and dominique could strangle varel for not informing her of the queen’s arrival. down on one knee, her head bent in respect for the other’s authority, the warden commander exhales softly. a visit from the regent could be either good or bad, and she had no clues to gauge which one it was, leaving her feeling rather like a fish on land, gasping for air. all her years in the imperial court, and she flounders like a pathetic hand maiden. great.

She never knew what to say in situations where it counted the most, she found. And this was no different -- she knew Anora must be concerned. Alistair had declared his intention to marry her and take the throne beside her, and Anora had not missed the fact that they had been...

     “I know what Cailan did to you,” she admits finally. “What he was going to do. I found the letters at Ostagar, and I--”

She takes a breath. Her throat wants to close up, wants to choke the words into silence and help the rest of her forget that this is really happening. 

     “There is no need to worry. I will not be in the way. And Alistair is... a good man. You might even be... happy together.”

Who would Cauthrien pick as the best potential suitor for Anora in the bannorn if she remains Queen and unmarried after DA:O?

I mean if we are discussing the most suitable marriage that Anora could make, it would have to be Fergus really. Banns and Arls both aren’t really elligible nor qualified to be a Prince-Consort. Teyrns are the only part of the Nobility besides the crown that have to manage Banns and their loyalties. But then, who the frick would be Teyrn of Highever after that? 

Honestly I think the dreadful state of Ferelden’s nobility is never discussed enough. The Country was already low on Noble houses before the blight, Nobility being one of the first targets of the Orlesian Occupation and then a bunch of traitorous lords were executed after the rebellion was successful as well. After the Blight, well... they’ve lost all of one Teyrnir’s Lords to Death or the Crown and poor grieving Fergus is the last remaining Cousland, tasked with reviving his whole house. 

They literally don’t have enough Families left to manage all of the Bannorns and Teyrnirs. At this point actions like raising Shianni to a Bann’s position is not only morally right, but an example of something they’re going to have to do a lot of. In all honestly, Knights are going to have to start creating their own new noble families, Anora using the reasoning of ‘rewarding heroism’ to just bolster the number of people running things. 

So really, returning to your main question, there are two things Anora could do. Either she can marry Fergus, then raise one of her Arl’s into his seat at highever and raise one of their Knights into the absent Arling’s seat. OR she can find a suitor inside a different royal family. However THAT course of action is incredibly dangerous for her. Who the frick isn’t an enemy of someone? Literally nobody. There is no one she can marry without pissing someone else off and, in Ferelden’s pretty fucking flimsy state, she really can’t afford to do that.

Hah Hah!! And yet in Canon Anora still manages to lead Ferelden into another golden age!! I fucking love her!!! She’s literally amazing!! FUCK

The world was turning itself inside out. 

But even after everything, he idea that Anora would be accusing her Father, Cauthrien, of keeping her locked away was... Cauthrien could barely square such a concept in her mind. Howe’s treachery and deciet ran so deeply, yet Cauthrien had never seen it until that very moment. It was a sickening thought. 

But she knew one thing she had to do, she had to see Anora. Getting inside Arl Eamon’s estate was a lot easier than it should have been. Obviously he wasn’t expecting something like this, Cauthrien draped in a dark cloak and slipping about his rooms to see her... Lover? Probably. Friend? Maker, she hoped so.

“Anora?!” She’d hissed, finally finding her elegant figure and quietly closing the door behind her. Her hood was cast down as she came closer, eyes scanning her Queen’s figure with concern. “Are you alright? What is... what is happening? Why are you here of all places?”

Fierce, determined, demanding, and ever did she seem like she was already queen of the world. Considering who exactly her parents were, that should come as no surprise. But even so, lessons had to be taught in even the simplest and most endearing matters if it is to be instilled properly.
