Depends on the fiction of course, but mage robes were used for two reasons traditionally: Many spells require a gesture or series of gestures, wearing heavy Armour would impede this ability. Secondly the sleeves were sewn with bags and pockets internally so they could carry alchemical ingredients, ink and quills, books, parchment and so on.
These reasons are both significantly dumber than mage robes essentially being mana armor

Gogol Bordello is a cool Gypsy Punk band, they I think they're American but they're Romani so idk if it counts or not. If you like Pop music I like Yelle. CSS is a rock/new wave/pop band from Brazil that I quite like.
