SAN FRANCISCO MENTION :: Porchetta Sandwich from Roli Roti, $8.50
STUFF INSIDE: porchetta, onion marmalade, bitter greens
You know when you're in the mood for a Porchetta sandwich at 9:30 in the morning? No? That's never happened? Try walking by the Roli Roti stall in the Ferry Building Farmer's Market and you'll know what I'm talking about. About eight pork loins are roasted openly on a spit. The scent's crazy intoxicating. It's as if the Sirens in Homer's Odyssey were an island of roasted pig butts. The sandwich more than pays it off. The porchetta's juicy. The caramelized onions add sweetness, which always goes well with pork. The field greens makes it actually feel healthy. The downside is that there's no crunchy burnt ends or crispy skin like Porchetta's porchetta. Though it's probably more flavorful than Di Paolo's.
