ELMO'S INVENTION, CHAPTER 11
ELMO’S INVENTION CHAPTER 11 ELMO’S TIME MACHINE One day after work Elmo stopped, once again, at Brooker’s farm for fertilized eggs. “How you doing, Elmo?” he shouted seeing Elmo as Brooker one of his coops. “Not bad,” Elmo responded. “Not bad.” Brooker said, “I guess you come for more eggs. Got to tell you, son, this deal is saving me money on feed and such. Hope we can keep it going…
Most human embryos die naturally after conception – restrictive abortion laws do not account for this embryo loss
Many state legislatures are seriously considering using early-stage human embryos for legal personality. Total ban on abortion who believe that humans have all rights from the moment of conception have created a confusing legal area which affects a wide range of fieldsincluding assisted reproductive technologies, contraception, essential medical care and parental rights, among others. However,…

Chick Born With Curled Toes Gets Special ‘Shoes’ So She Can Walk
In some ways, a soon-to-be hatched chicken egg represents life’s potential in its purest form — the developing creature it contains being totally unaware of what awaits them in the world beyond.
Often it’s a sad existence. But in this case it was kindness.

To that one anon: Just because a egg and sperm fertilize doesn't really mean it's going to live yet. That's if it even touches the uterine walls (or in rare cases the fallopian tube which doesn't guarantee the fetus will live) and that stays there and a miscarriage doesn't happen. It's alive but if it leaves too early it's not guaranteed to live outside the uterus.
To be fair no life is guaranteed survival inside or outside the uterus, and this fact is irrelevant to the morality of taking a human life. I think, therefore, this argument carries much less weight than the argument from bodily autonomy.
On the other hand the fragility and contingency of embryonic life does raise an interesting question, specifically about the lengths to which it is permissible to go in order to protect them. As you say about half of all fertilized eggs die by being flushed out of pregnant people’s bodies without implanting. This is over five times the number that die by induced abortion.
(Basis for figure: 50% of fertilized eggs are rejected for implantation in the uterus. The other half successfully implant, but 10-20% of these are lost to spontaneous abortion, that is miscarriage, and of the remainder about 20% are terminated by induced abortion. Taking the low end of miscarriage statistics, that means 50% * 90% * 20% = 9% of all embryos and fetuses that started out as fertilized eggs are aborted, which is less than one-fifth of the number of fertilized eggs initially lost by failing to implant in the uterine lining.)
A major reason that uteri reject fertilized eggs for implantation is due to genetic abnormalities in the embryos, and one promising avenue for fertility and miscarriage treatment is to alter the uterine lining so that it will accept more embryos for implant.
Now, suppose that scientists came up with a drug that alters the uterine lining so that it accepts all embryos. If all AFAB people were made to take this drug, that would save the lives of half of all unborn babies fertilized--it would save more human lives than the polio vaccine and stopping all induced abortion forever.
And sure, rates of pregnancy would double and incidences of fetal deformities, miscarriage, stillbirths, infant mortality, and disability in born children would skyrocket, as would complications including mortality in pregnant people. But why should that matter? Shouldn’t all unborn babies be given a chance to live, even if they have a high chance of being disabled? Also, not that it should matter, but not all embryos rejected by the uterine lining have genetic abnormalities, meaning a significant number of able-bodied babies would also be saved with this drug.
One might raise the objection that people should have the autonomy to decide for themselves whether to take this drug or not, but why should personal autonomy take priority over the deaths of half of all unborn children? Yes, a person who became pregnant after taking this drug would have a high chance of miscarriage or of giving birth to a disabled baby, but with the best care their chance of death is very low. Besides, they can cut the chance of these adverse outcomes to virtually nil by abstaining from penis-in-vagina sex for their fertile years. Why should their desire to have sex come at the cost of the unborn children’s deaths? The possibility of rape should be no excuse, either, given that an unborn baby conceived by rape did nothing wrong and deserves to live.
So consistency demands that if a drug that made uteri accept all fertilized eggs were developed, anti-abortion advocates should campaign to make it mandatory for all AFAB people. Otherwise it sure looks as though they don’t give a fig about unborn babies, doesn’t it?
