SPOILER WARNING + Salt
Alright, let’s dive into the hot mess that is cursed.
As a lesbian, one of the things I really love is a show that introduces a female protagonist and does it well. Cursed, isn’t that, and I’m gonna be harsh because while I love Nimue, and I did like what they did, I’m not really happy with how this story was presented.
First, the Actress for Nimue is decent, she definitely feels and breathes a character dealing with trauma and facing a rock in a hard place. But really this is kind of where the story ends. Cursed is an example in how not to worldbuild. The amount of random information tossed at you at different angles and without really any foundation doesn’t help.
Excalibur as the One Ring was, interesting, and Nimue as a young powerful Fey Queen was a good idea. The casting was obviously blind and inclusive and that was definitely a major plus for this series. The problem is a lot of the nuance of the series plus a few other things really just kind of putters out. Once we ignore Nimue’s story and start adding other actors such as Cumber, and the other Pendragon claimants everything get’s mired in da fuq. There are so many random story devices and the acting is so blah I couldn’t really get into it. All I cared about was Nimue and the Fey, I gave no shits about Cumber, or anyone else.
Plus, I’m not exactly okay with depicting Leprosy as a sort of weird zombie esque supernatural thing. I get it they were going for a under-king with the leper king, but gods don’t use a debilitating disease in such an easy fashion. So ignoring some of the tone deaf storytelling, and the haphazard presentation, it’s an okay dull yer mind story. Gay Morgana was a nice addition and I really do like how they are spreading out and diversifying the arthurian cast. Hopefully this series pulls around in Season 2, or I’m just gonna wait for more Warrior Nun.
