wait so for real... fellow fic writers do you really reply to every comment you get? or every comment for the first day or two? or just the comments you have something to say to?

Update plus replies under the cut <3
I hope you all enjoyed chapter one~! Sadly I may need a day or two to prepare the next chapter BUT since I know I have some fresh blood since starting my DPR, because they do exist in the same universe, just different time periods, I recommend reading my BPR @bouquet-of-scissors while you wait. You’ll see some similar themes but all with good reason ❤
The Petals are still on hiatus, but soon I hope to be in a place where I’m posting both stories at the same time, there are just too many complicated things that I need to spend time on or my DPR at the moment.
Anyway, onward to the replies!

ok here is a little josh that is inappropriate for the longer thread
when i first heard someone say they reply to all their comments
As a reader I feel bummed out if I make a long ass comment and receive no reply or if the author keeps insisting on how they just need comments to survive and then don't answer even one person. Otherwise I understand. But maybe that's just me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ok! i understand feeling bummed out, especially when you write longer comments.
ig to address the ‘need comments to survive’ aspect, i acknowledge that there’s a lot of discussion around whether it’s ‘owed’ to authors or not. here’s my take on it...
ATLA is actually the first fandom where i reply to comments (maybe at all?). in my experience as a writer, especially when i was in the stage of “please please comment,” i didn’t see the need to directly reply to individual comments because my next chapter or fic was the reply to the comments i’d gotten. for me, replying to comments is work just as writing fic is, if that makes sense? for example, last night instead of writing a 1.5k fic i replied to 8 comments
i don’t think either interpretation of comments and replies are better or worse-- that writers should acknowledge the supporters of their work, or that fic text and comments are the dialogue between writers and readers. it’s just different perspectives. what do you think? are there other readers who write longer comments who feel similar/dissimilar?
When i leave a comment I do not expect a reply. Its always nice to get one but i leave comments for the writer! I just want them to know that their work touched me and that I am happy they shared it with us. Replies always feel good too but i dont really ‘anticipate’ replies if that makes sense. I also tend to leave shorter/simpler comments.
ok i feel like this is the most relatable response i’ve had. i tend to leave longer comments because i know that’s what i really appreciate (even copying and pasting my favorite lines with a short response, idk), but i reply to (most?) comments that have something unique in them that i can address, or have some kind of conversation starter...
thanks for your ask! 🤔 i m thinking
A few more replies
sorry for the repost I didn’t notice I put this on the wrong blog
@cowberrry @rachaeloftheuniverse
Some of the best things in my inbox have been from replies to my comments. Once someone told me my comment made them write a whole ass other chapter! obvi I don’t expect it but it’s a nice thing to read. And from a writers perspective sometimes it’s nice to watch your comment count double 😂
OK DKFJ to be real before i heard commenters really like getting replies, i literally assumed people replying to all their comments just wanted to double their comment count
but that’s why i’m really interested in everyone’s opinions on it because i don’t see much comprehensive discussion about it? and i think fandoms tend to have their own “culture” surrounding it-- previously i didn’t often reply to comments, and i didn’t often get replies, so ATLA has been a new experience for me LOL
also yeah i definitely think more comments can be a big source of motivation to writers! i commented on a fic from 5+ years ago in a niche fandom and the writer replied and said they were considering writing more again! :)
thanks for your perspective <3
wait keep sending me asks about fic comments and replies but i’ll be back in a few hours 😳
