honestly i think sokka should’ve had iroh’s cameos in LOK
sure, Aang’s kids probably would’ve met Iroh, but can you imagine them coming across Sokka? Uncle Sokka? Who they haven’t seen in 10-20 years? who would ask about their mother/they would be able to tell their mom about seeing? Sokka giving spiritual guidance to a Southern Water Tribe Avatar, after years of his own cynicism? Sokka turning to the Moon Spirit to ask for help finding Jinora, his own great niece??

Piandao served as an alternative model of masculinity and support for Sokka, not as a model of femininity. It's a version of karate kid or drunken master or many older stories where the master teaches the student to do things "unrelated" to mastering the craft except it turns out to be related (it plays different as one episode of a series than the entire movie, obviously).
Calligraphy and painting are ancient art forms practiced by all genders. It's not shorthand for a character being queer or fem any more than cooking is. If Sokka respects Katara and Suki and Toph so little that he has to learn about his feminine side from a man who is not feminine at all I think we've all lost the plot. The whole point of Sokka's arc imo is that he learns there is no rigid boundary of what men or women do, or what is feminine or masculine.
Of course Hakoda is still his (unrealistic) ideal and the goal that he's striving towards, but by having new models and more nuanced understandings of how someone can exist-- Suki's femininity, Piandao's masculinity, and Toph and Katara and Aang-- he learns to be more accepting of himself AND honestly understands his father better as a whole person.

love the potential of sokka waiting outside of the birthing room while his only daughter is having her first child, reassuring tonraq that everything will be fine. being handed his first grandchild.

i really think that LOK retroactively destroyed the idea of “science” we could have built in the avatar world. like instead of continuing to show the type of science in avatar-- observation and utilization of the natural world such as with the herbalist and even the mechanist-- it turned heel and went with western invention and profit driven science, such as with hiroshi sato and varrick. and that has really rotted interpretations of ATLA and FRANKLY interpretations of sokka. god how many times do i have to reiterate that spirituality does not preclude science when the world they exist in is built on a foundation of literal lion turtles giving people superpowers . that is a scientifically proven fact in the avatar world like what is NOT CLICKING
