Okay but i love thinking about Cecil being suddently given some white magic as a treat when he overcomes his Paladin trial
Does it means that the white magic is part of the paladin job or does he naturally has some potential for it (and possibly managed some Cure as a kid but gave that up to focus on knighthood did Rosa and Cecil bond about it for a short moment)? Up to interpretation ! I love to think about both possibilities. In any case, he is inexperienced for sure.
My headcanon is that he could manage to learn some more spells if he properly trained (though i like to think that his additional spells in the DS version (Shell and Protect) are canon because defensive spells make a lot of sense for him. He can also learn Raise!)
But like, fresh out of the trial, do Tellah, Porom and Palom imediately sense that he is a little more magical than before or does it come up on the battlefield like :
Cecil: ah, that skeleton got me...
Porom: Oh, let me just...
Cecil : *use Cure on himself*
I like to think about Porom being tied between her somewhat shy reverence for Cecil and the need to help out and give advice to, well..a newbie, and Tellah's father side come out once or twice (even though i don't think he sees himself as Cecil's father figure) and has no such restriction. They cheer when Cecil finally managed Cure 2 and he is a little proud of it
Palom makes joking snide comments about Cecil "getting the uncool kind of magic" (and is a little envious since he can't really help Cecil with this beside some general comments on magic, but gets over it since he shares black magic with Tellah, his idol, and Tellah recognize very well his potential, the kid is stronger than many mages already). In any case he is less shy about saying that Cecil is a newbie.
Cecil didn't really need additional confusion but he recognise it as an occasion to rethink how he use his powers, along with the holy sword. He is not a white mage properly speaking though and is fine with being a knight first and using his magic to support Rosa (or Tellah and Porom at some point) if needed. He is privately glad that there is always a better white mage than him in the team though. He does not see himself as such.
Now that i think about it, Rydia meeting the team again (when she is adult) is with her not knowing white magic anymore and Cecil having some.
Edge sometimes makes some jokes about Cecil's magic not being the best of the market, at first Rydia and Kain get annoyed at him mostly because they need a moment to warm up to Edge and his manners but when they are all more comfortable with each others (after or before Kain's stunt in the sealed cave, idk) it becomes a light hearted private joke.
At some point the team spilts up for one reason or another and Cecil is with Edge and like
Edge : well, good think i have potions with me eh?
Cecil, not taking the bait and having a realisation : wait who has the antidotes?
At some point Edge gets poisoned and they are glad Cecil knows some white magic actually
(And to his credit, his spell variety is limited but his cast time is decent)
Rosa does not make fun about him like Palom and Edge do, but she is not above teasing him a little if she sense he is in the mood. They sometimes practice together, half for pratical reason and half to hang out.
Taking TAY into account, it becomes a way for the two of them + Kain to hang out too. They joke a bit about which one of their "bad" white magic is the worst, but ultimately they know that Protect + Shell fits Cecil well and that Haste is a good spell for a dragoon (and also Rosa is the real white mage here)
Rydia comes to Cecil's "defense" and tells Edge that his little flames are not that great in comparison to the inferno she can unleash (not because she is arrogant about it, but because they are joking around). She is afraid for a second that it sounded a little too much like Rubicante's words but Edge laughed it off. Fair enough.
They don't exactly have time to joke a lot (and they obviously recognise and respect everyone's strenght there), but sometimes, around a safe space, when everyone need to chill and nobody is actually too nervous to not snap...
Golbez has complicated feelings about it. In a DS flashback cutscene, he tries (and fail) to use white magic to heal his dying father. Secretely, he is proud of Cecil, about it.
(Take my 1/4 headcanons and 3/4 random thoughts rambling haha)
