'Hey, Gabby! Where are you?'
Damn, my sister again. She believes that she has an absolute right to order me around. Miranda pokes her head from the bathroom, with her hair totally tangled. `Look, I have a bad hair day!!’ She shakes her head like a drenched dog, spilling a mixture of hair cream and water over the floor. 'Stop that weird head-banging, sis. The floor is getting wet.' Miranda's bad hair day means pure misery to me. She refuses to go anywhere, rambling about everything. Even worse, Miranda and her partner Laura have decided to throw a party this evening. It seems like I am the one who has to run around and pick up food and drink for that goddamn party. 'Miranda, my babe! Calm down. I know you are gorgeous, and I love your messy hair!' Laura catches Miranda with a huge towel. Winking, Laura whispers to my ears. a 'I'll take care of her. Could you please fetch the pizzas we ordered from the shop?' Well, what can I do? I knew it'd turn out like this anyway. I shrug my shoulders, grab the shopping bag and jump out on the street. The street is filled with pale, milky sunlight of late afternoon. Chilly air ruffles my hair, telling me that winter is coming close. Shit, I forgot to bring my scarf. I head back home with five massive boxes of pizza.
Noisy dance music hits my ear as I enter the flat. The room stinks like a pub on Friday night already. I stare at strange creatures - I mean, five people, all wearing an animal onesie. 'Badass friends’ of Miranda and Laura, apparently. 'Thank you for bringing us food, darling! Why don't you join our onesie-party? We don't have a spare onesie, but we have this cute fox hoodie with a fluffy tail!' The one wearing a cow onesie tries to drag me into the party, but I pull myself away with a frown. I'm into neither a silly costume nor a stupid party. Miranda, in a pink tiger onesie, shrugs her shoulders. 'No need to hustle, guys. Gabby prefers skateboarding over our fabulous party.' 'Yeah, yeah. Enjoy your fabulous party!' As I step outside with my beloved skateboard, someone throws something soft at my back. A huge green lizard aka Laura is at the doorstep, waving at me. 'Don't catch a cold, honey!' I stick a tongue at her. How can I wear this ridiculous thing in front of my other stake buddies!?
The familiar sound of skateboarding and the chilly evening breeze are comforting. Skating down the street like the wind, I look at the sky and find a moon. Perfectly round and incredibly bright. There is something very unusual, very enchanting about this moon.
Bump!!
I find myself flying in the air for a second.
Then a crash followed by a groan. Thankfully, no blood spilled on the ground.
'I, I'm really sorry, I was distracted by, by...' The person whom I collided with pushes me as if trying to run away. 'W, wait!' I grab the sleeve of his hoodie. He is towering in front of me, his silhouette so dark against the bright moon. 'Eh!!?? Lars!!??' That's one of my skate mates, Lars. I gotta add that he always appears at the worst time - like when my eyes turned red due to hunger. He caught me buying loads of raw fish for dinner as well. But so far, he is dense enough not to find out my true identity. 'Heh, nice bumping into you, Gabby. But I gotta go now.' Lars' voice is strangely hoarse. He picks up his baseball cap and puts it back on hastily.
But I see the things which are supposed not to be there - two triangular ears!
'Werewolf...?'
'It's just cosplay, kiddo! You know that, yeah?' As Lars forces himself to make a fake smile, sharp fangs shine under the silver moonlight. 'You are the real one, aren't you?' The initial shock is fading away from my heart. I feel strange - maybe relieved to find a similar kind? Lars' gaze meets mine. It's piercing, almost intolerable. Only werewolves can have such a gaze. Lars sighs in the end. 'Just a quarter-blood, though.' I can't help myself but grab his head, pulling close to me. 'Then sniff!' Lars looks confused. 'Huh? What the hell are you doing?' 'Just sniff. Can't you smell anything?' He makes his signature-stupid-face. 'Can't smell anything, dude. Did you have weed or something?' 'Duh! Focus! Idiot!' Silence, then he looks at my face. 'Hmm maybe...blood?' Lars finally gets it. 'Shit, did you hurt yourself?' Well, he doesn't. 'Agh, no, no. I'm a vampire! And vampires smell a bit different from humans!' Lars shrugs his shoulders, pretending to be indifferent. But his little fluffy ears are turning forward, ruining his effort to play cool. 'Do you have anywhere to go and hide? Then, come to my flat. We'll talk about it, but I need a drink first.' 'Umm, ok, dude.' Then, a brilliant idea hit my mind. 'Use this to cover up your wolf ears, Lars. Now you are a proper fox!' I throw that ridiculous hoodie over his head, giggling. Pinching at the foxtail, he raises eyebrows but puts on the hoodie without protesting. 'Let's go, Foxy!'
It is weird but nice, I guess.
