So I’m gonna share a few little things about Dios so you can get to know her a little more, just in case you haven’t read Witch Hunt yet.
A few years after the downfall of Sorceress Adel, a group of Galbadian soldiers who were unhappy with Vinzer Deling’s inaction about finding and destroying any more Sorceresses that may follow in Adel’s footsteps, defected and formed the Witch Hunters. They would pay hefty sums to those who would sell out Sorceresses and the people who harbored them. They would then break into their homes and slaughter them. While they killed the whole family, leaving none alive, they did not know that in order for a Sorceress to die peacefully she must pass on her powers to another woman.
Word spread quickly about the Witch Hunt and before long, the rebels found out that the whole town of Roshfall (my headcannon village outside the forest of Roshfall) were keeping the fact that a Sorceress was living there peacefully with her family under wraps. It was decided the whole village must go as Sorceress sympathizers were no use to them in this world.
They proceeded to burn the whole village down and kill everyone in it, but they made a fatal mistake. The leader, upon discovering the Sorceress, shot her fatally through the chest and left her to die in her kitchen, not knowing Dios was also there hiding in the cupboards. In Dios’ mother’s final ounces of strength, she encased the whole house under a protect spell and passed her powers on to her unsuspecting daughter. Dios was eight at this time.
Some of Cid’s first SeeDs were hired to investigate the house protected by magic a short time later and after dispelling the magic, found Dios hiding in the cupboards next to her deceased mother’s body. They took her to Garden with them not knowing what she had become.
Seifer was the first child she met at Balamb; it was after Cid had gotten Dr. Kadowaki to examine the young girl for her entrance paperwork, she instantly flung herself into his arms as he was the first non-adult she had met. I don’t want to spoil how they became friends (@misplacedxheroics knows though), that will come in later chapters of my fics, but she did something that made him instantly respect her and that’s how they begun their friendship.
She became SeeD at the age of fifteen on a mission in Dollet where they had to rescue the Duke’s three children from mercenaries who wanted Dollet to be a dukedom no more. Where Dios succeeded in this mission, Seifer didn’t because he went against orders of purely getting the hostages back to the embassy and instead chased after the mercenaries. Dios was ordered to follow him and made her first kills which shocked her, but mostly because she had no feeling towards the killing.
Seifer and Dios made a pact to never use the Para-Magic junctioning system ever again after the two started forgetting their childhoods, namely because one day they tried to recall how they first met and could not remember the details. After some research Seifer found the rumor that Guardian Forces cause memory loss in their users so he pulled Dios aside and made her promise never to use one again. Due to this memory loss, she also does not remember how she came to be at Garden, only that she knows she entered at the age of eight.
At the age of sixteen she was hired out by a Galbadian Government official to gather intelligence on her husband under the guise of her thinking he was cheating on her, but in reality it was because he was running an underground drug and prostitution ring (and she married him in the first place to get more information to put him away). She came across the warehouse where she was knocked out by one of his thugs and brought to a torture room. Because she would not divulge who hired her and who she was working for, the thugs took turns beating her to a pulp yet the bruises would heal quite quickly, confusing them.
After Dios failed to report to her contract holder for several days, she did her own sleuthing and found that Dios has been taken hostage and was being beaten severely by her husband’s henchmen. She contacted Cid, telling him the truth about why she hired Dios in the first place and told him she would pay triple if she sent out a rescue team for her as she would not be able to live with herself if Dios were to die. Cid agreed and in turn made it a SeeD exam, but he did not tell the participants who they were rescuing, just that they were to rescue an operative that had been caught mid mission and was currently being held captive. Seifer was a part of his exam. They knew it was serious when both Cid and Dr. Kadowaki accompanied them to Galbadia, they were expecting the worst. The Cadets and SeeDs went to the warehouse and they were let in by the unsuspecting ring leader, but once asked if they were holding anyone captive things turned violent, henchmen attacking them from all directions.
Seifer noticed two come out of a door, once holding a kitchen knife stained in blood so he bolted for that door and found who the captive was, suspended in the air by her dainty wrists. A lone light shone on her as crimson blood trickled down from the right side of her neck and onto the floor. He quickly cut her down and screamed for Quistis and Xu who came and tended to her as she bled out. Out of anger he killed everyone involved against orders of at least keeping the leader alive so he could be charged. As a consequence he failed that exam.
After recovering from that ordeal, Dios developed an irrational fear of leaving Garden which was accompanied by severe panic attacks if the notion was brought up. It was found out when over the Summer break when she went to go holidaying in Timber with Seifer, Raijin and Fujin but had a massive meltdown halfway to the Balamb Train Station. They were going to cancel the whole trip, but Dios told Seifer that she would hate him forever if he didn’t go, so he did and that’s when he met Rinoa. It was over this summer break she started working for Dr. Kadowaki, leaning as many skills as possible from the seasoned practitioner so she decided that because she had this fear of leaving Garden, she would make herself useful by being the Doctor’s right hand woman.
During the events of FFVIII, Dios stayed within Garden’s walls, tending to the injured SeeDs and finding about Seifer second hand from Raijin, Fujin and Squall. Because she couldn’t be there to help she was extremely saddened, but also angry that Seifer would do such a thing.
It wasn’t until Seifer’s trail did she start to forgive him when it was found out that he was being manipulated by Ultimecia’s magic and he had lost a lot of his memories of that time, but she will forever hold a grudge against him for missing out on her eighteenth birthday (though he did send her a very briefly worded card (Laguna forced him to)).
Raijin and Fujin visit her on a constant basis, delivering her supplies (for example, new clothes, lady stuff, etc.) and Fujin is the only other person after Dr. Kadowaki that knows Dios’ measurements so that she can buy her the correct undergarments. They do this for her because she is not only Seifer’s best friend, but she is also a good friend of theirs and they want to make sure that she is looked after while Seifer is gone.
