"THE GIFT," A 52-PAGE GRAPHIC NOVEL ABOUT FLYING GLORY AND THE HOUNDS OF GLORY, TO RELEASE FIRST THREE PAGES AUG. 31ST, 2015
GLENDALE, Calif. (August 15, 2015) – FLYING GLORY AND THE HOUNDS OF GLORY, located on the website http://www.flying-glory.com, will kick off a 52 page graphic novel special on Aug. 31st, 2015, covering the first holiday season its main cast experiences together as a band. This storyline will be marked by releasing the first three pages of the issue simultaneously. "The Gift" takes place between issues three and four of the webcomic, which originally came out in 2003 and 2005 (re-released in full color in 2004 and 2006, respectively). The story became challenging enough to maintain on a regular basis that the comic continued exclusively in black and white starting with Issue five in late 2005, and also at this point the choice was made to skip doing a holiday special until an undetermined future date.
"When the origin story was done from 2001 to 2003, we'd hoped to be able to then sell to other markets or media," explains Shannon Muir, co-writer of the FLYING GLORY AND THE HOUNDS OF GLORY webcomic, on which she partners with co-writer and artist Kevin Paul Shaw Broden. "We really thought if there would be more stories to tell, we'd be doing it in partnership with others. However, when those opportunities didn't arise, we still found ourselves wanting to do more with those characters. So we've continued to partner up and work together on additional stories as our schedules permit. We love these characters and know they have many more stories to tell."
The release of "The Gift" is the first time that a storyline will be intentionally written and paced to be a single adventure not later split up into segments. Previous to this, the longest single issue was Issue 14 at 36 pages as a 10th Anniversary Special. What now comprises issues one through three originally came out as 107 pages but ultimately was divided into its three acts so that it would be easier to read.
"We knew that there was a missing piece of history between the origin story and issue four, and originally felt once Issue four completed we would revisit the idea. It's just that the urgency going on at the time to save the Fox Fullerton was so timely, we needed to get that story told," Muir explains, referencing the 2005 successful struggle to save the Fox Fullerton Theatre in Broden's hometown of Fullerton, Calif., where she attended graduate school at the time. "It also would be the first time we'd put the characters in a story conceived as a single issue from the outset. As we worked on writing what would follow, It became clear to us that we needed to find our footing doing the shorter stories before we committed to telling a longer story again as we had with the origin story."
As a result, "The Gift" remained shelved for quite a period of time. Old poem song lyrics were set aside for it, and a couple new ones were written. Every so often "The Gift" would come up in various conversations while attending comic conventions, and at one time a Kickstarter approach was even contemplated. In the end, it became apparent that juggling the regular storyline plus doing what would be needed for the special issue just wasn't feasible.
Forward to 2015, and Broden and Muir deciding to take their longtime creative partnership to the next level by getting married. As Issue 17 came to a close, both realized they needed to take a break from doing a weekly page release for the wedding.
"Well, it’s August and the Hounds of Glory are snapping at my heels to get back to doing what they do best, Rock and Roll and smashing super villains," Broden explains. "Well, maybe that's not what they do best, but they want to get back to telling stories about their teenage life as costumed super heroes and a rock and roll band. They've waited long enough, and so has our audience. As promised, we begin another story in their lives starting at the end of this month. Why have they been off the stage so long? In late June my co-creator and co-writer Shannon Muir became something that didn't need a 'co' before it. She became my wife!! And I in turn became her husband!! I'm not certain who got the better deal in all that. So our creative partnership became a whole lot more so. We celebrated with family and friends through July, and August has been a time to get things back in motion. So here I am, hard at work over my computer working on the art that begins this new 52 page online graphic novel. The band is raring to go, and Flying Glory flying overhead full of her usual excitement. Hope you're looking forward to it as much as we are."
After taking a six month break, the pair did not want to return and simply just pick up where they left off. They wanted to do something special for readers as a kind of gift for waiting through the hiatus.
"As soon as the words were said, the answer was obvious," Muir elaborates. "This was the time for this issue to be done. Also, we knew we were reaching a point where certain elements from the tale would need to be addressed to continue with the storyline at hand. For example, the band's now former manager has had a plotline where he was tied up with loan sharks, even after the problem was solved last Christmas as he hints in one issue. He finally confesses about it to someone close to him in Issue 17, so it seems the right time for the audience to get the whole story. Finally, and I need to keep spoilers to a minimum, there's a character coming up that is important whose first appearance is in this special issue. The audience needs to meet her as well. We both hope people will find it worth the wait."
While waiting for the new story to start, Broden and Muir encourage readers to visit http://www.flying-glory.com and get to know the band and their friends.
