Founded in 1796, the southwestern Ohio city emerged as a manufacturing and aviation capital before changing industrial demands and rising competition from Asia in the 1970s led to decades of decline. OZY--THIS NEW YORKER IS REVIVING JEWISH LIFE IN KRAKOW

BY STEPHEN STARR (FGJ ‘13) - Jonathan Ornstein has listened to countless retellings of this city’s ghastly past. The industrial killing. Death camps. The Holocaust. The Krakow ghetto and the Auschwitz concentration camp, an hour west of this Polish city, were the settings for horrific crimes against humanity. Few cities are as infamous for the level reached by the Nazi extermination machine as Krakow: Along its ghettoized city streets, thousands of Jews starved to death or were murdered during World War II. Approximately 70,000 Jews lived in the city before the Nazis invaded in September 1939; today there are thought to be fewer than a thousand. READ MORE

OZY--BULLFIGHTING ... WITHOUT THE BLOOD

We are high above the town of Artvin in Turkey’s Alpine-like northeast, where 107 bulls have been hauled from valleys around the Black Sea region to fight each other. THE NATIONAL--Myanmar past and present meet at the Secretariat

BY STEPHEN STARR (FGJ ‘13) - The Rohingya crisis may be damaging Myanmar’s international standing, but in Yangon life goes on. There’s an expectant atmosphere on the grounds of the colonial-era Secretariat complex in the city’s downtown district. Wide-eyed young people have come armed with smiles and smartphones. More forward-thinking visitors have arrived with professional photographers in tow. In the grounds outside the horseshoe-shaped, 15,200-square-metre building, construction workers and engineers are collecting steel and carrying around armloads of maps. READ MORE
