I had been at my computer desk for the entire night. The early morning soon creeping up on Chaldea for the sound of people to be walking by my room. Yet I didn’t pay it much notice as I kept myself busy. Both of my hands working at sewing my very torn up uniform jacket. While I watched survival videos on my computer to study. Stuff about camping out and how to forage. Things that most of the Servants already knew how to do. But I had zero idea on.
So I kept watching videos about different things. In the hope that I was better prepared the next time I went to a Singularity. Since the last time had ended with me breaking my leg as well as my pride. The cast going from my heel all the way up to my knee. Hence why I wasn’t wearing pajama pants. It was too much effort whenever I had to use the bathroom to keep trying to get them on and off.
My door opens without the customary ring. So I can guess who decided to show up and bother me. Which has me pause in my sewing to give a long sigh. “I’ll go to bed once I finish with this seam. Promise. I just want to finish this last thing. Then I will head for bed. Not before. Bad enough I’m benched to make everyone else do all the heavy lifting. Just let me finish this, please.”
I’m not surprise that both Servants at my door give sighs of resignation in reply to my request. Saber walking into the room for Archer to follow. Both of them not looking pleased but choosing to skip the argument. Archer instead walking over with a tray laden with food and drink. Which does catch my attention as my stomach makes a loud growl at the smell. So I blink to carefully turn myself in my chair to look at them. Saber carrying a new night blouse for me as well as a fluffy pair of hospital socks. All for Archer to set the tray down and pull up the other chair so he can sit next to me. His words the same stoic tone that hides a tad trace of warm humor. “Breakfast first, Retha. Then we will get you a shower before you sleep. Hence why I brought Saber along. Since we all know you would protest and try to put such off until next month when that cast comes off.”
The jacket gets set carefully on the floor next to my chair as I close down my computer for the day. Soon scooting the keyboard away so I can bring the tray of food in front of me. The plate holding scrambled eggs, steak, and a cinnamon roll that is dripping with extra frosting. A cup of blackberry tea as well as a glass of water next to my plate. I give a low moan of thanks before I just dig into the food. Not caring about table manners as Saber moves to start picking up my discarded clothes around the dirty clothes bin. Her huff soon followed by serious words as Archer leans back in his chair. “Master Retha. These items either look like they are going to disintegrate on the next wash or that you’ve used quilt pieces to stitch them back together. Why have you not gotten new clothes?”
I swallow my drink of tea to think on best how to put this. Soon shrugging my shoulder to answer. “One. I wear my uniform most of the time. Two. Our supplies are limited so we make do with what we have. Three. many of those casual clothes are from family or friends. Hence why I haven’t thrown them out yet. Last I checked, we never summoned Arachne as any kind of Servant to see to making more textiles. So unless that changed, we have to make do.”
Both Saber and Archer look surprised at my last comment. With Archer soon smiling that rare and good smile as Saber rolls her eyes. The King of Knights shaking her head before she makes her point. “I am certain that several of the Servants have some way of crafting us more clothes if we really need to address that problem, Master. So you do not need to go to such extremes. I will place a formal inquiry with Da Vinci so that we can discuss such at the next meeting.”
Saber goes to move a rather big looking blanket next to my nightstand for her to jump back when a loud yowl comes out of it. Archer freezing in alertness as my very lazy cat rolls out of the blanket to growl at being disturbed. Which has Saber huff in relief to as the cat walks past her and right to Archer. Who immediately picks the cat up to settle the feline in his lap. The himalayan persian soon purring in utter delight as I laugh at the sight. “Sorry about that surprise, Saber. I forgot to warn you that Jalapeno uses that blanket for a feline fort.”
Saber goes wide eyed to ask me, “You named a beautiful persian Jalapeno?” Which has Archer chuckle in obvious amusement as Jalapeno licks his fingers. My own smile wide as I tell Saber, “Her full name is Baroness Minnie Jalapeno. When I was in high school, my good friend and his mom tended to name their cats really oddball things. There was Duchess Fiona Tater Tots. Princess Anastasia Bacon Bits. Baron Clive Pickles. And one really friendly kitten they named Emperor Fredrick Crouton. I thought it was awesome and hilarious. So whenever I get a new pet, I keep up the tradition.”
Saber actually laughs to look to the blanket and pick it up off the floor. Soon depositing all the items into my now full dirty clothes bin. With me finishing the tray of food to groan at being full. With Archer bringing the glass of water over to dip a finger into it and hold it out for my cat. Who licks his finger clean to purr at the cold taste. Archer looking up at me with those beautiful bronze eyes to then point towards the bathroom. “Now that you’ve eaten your fill, go and have Saber help you get a shower in. Saber can help secure the plastic covering over your cast to make sure we don’t ruin it. I will stay here and make a list of all the things we need to do for you. Including new clothes and perhaps an evening with-”
I toss my shirt at Archer for him to catch it with ease. My hands grabbing the crutches so I hobble as fast as I can into the bathroom to skip the rest of what Archer was going to suggest slash threaten me with. “You dare finish that sentence and you get a one way command to stand bare naked outside of Chaldea in the snow, Emiya! I mean it! Scheming opportunist! I’m gone already!”
So it is that I get myself into the bathroom for Saber to shake her head. Looking to Archer for her to point out, “You already scheduled for a certain someone to be here tonight to escort Retha out on a date, didn’t you?” Archer chooses not to comment as he keeps petting my cat. So Artoria gives him a smirk to not look surprised. Heading into the bathroom after me as Archer keeps petting my cat.
