Richard I Valentine's Day TL
Hi all! I know FGO isn't a fandom I normally post TLs for, but since I went through the effort of translating Richard's scene, I figured I might as well share it. I don't play on JP and I don't feel like grabbing screenshots from the recording I found on YouTube, so I don't have any screenshots for this one. Sorry about that! As always, see below the cut for the translation.
“Promotional Film
The Lionheart King Richard I”
“Produced in Collaboration with If you have the heart of a lion, you have a Direct Current Heart Edison
Narrated by Lady Yu is My Summer Xu Fu”
Xu Fu: Do you know of the lion’s heart!?
Xu Fu: The fangs of the beast that voraciously devours the darkness! The roar of the lion that rejects fate!
Xu Fu: Who is it that possesses such a resilient heart? That’s right, it’s the Lionheart King, Richard I!
Xu Fu: The king who led the vanguard on the battlefield, who smashed the head of the enemy commander with a hatchet!
Xu Fu: Could a proper battle have been fought under the command of such a king? (Somehow) It could! (Truly) It could!
Xu Fu: The sworn friend of Robin Hood? The wielder of Excalibur? The descendant of Melusine?
Xu Fu: Was it all a figment of the imagination? Or is it reality revealed by history?!
Xu Fu: The legendary Lionheart now walks through Chaldea, and the battlefield is—that’s right!
Xu Fu: Valentine’s Day!
///
Richard: That is why…
Richard: I have come! To give you! My return gift!
・Stay The Lionheart! (Quiet down!)
・I haven’t given you anything yet!
Richard: What is it? You really pay attention to the finest details, huh, Master!
Richard: Whether I’ve received chocolate or not…What a trivial problem!
・It’s important!
・Don’t tell me, are you the picky type, Your Majesty? [1]
Richard: Hahaha…Come to think of it, isn’t this the first conversation that we’ve had since I was summoned. Hurray for Valentine’s Day!
Richard: When I heard about this modern festival, I just couldn’t stay away!
Richard: It’s best to act quickly! I don’t really mind if I don’t get any chocolate!
Richard: In any case, it’ll just end up being a funny story about a fool who got ahead of himself, after all!
・You’re way too laid back…
・Is it a funny story, or a scary one…
Richard: Right then, let’s be off! I think the simulator’s going to be packed today!
・Aren’t you going a bit too fast?! [2]
・That’s exactly what I’m talking about, you know, Your Majesty?!
///
Richard: Wow, this simulator really is incredible! From the appearances of the townspeople to the smell of the air, it really is just like back then!
・Huh? Did you change your clothes?
Richard: Ah, that’s because I would stand out too much looking like that.
Richard: If they were clothes that could easily be reproduced, I thought they would start a trend here, though…
・Do you remember it well?
Richard: Yep. I even remember how many people were walking on the street. I spent more time here than in England, after all.
Richard: Now then, if this simulator has truly recreated that time, then today should be…
Richard: Oh, there they are!
・Huh…?
・Knights?
Richard: Um, quiet, quiet!
Richard: This person is my companion, so I want you to protect them with all your strength! I’m forbidding you from discussing their identity, however…
Richard: Now then, quiet down and follow me!
Richard: Alright! Let’s go! Things have certainly gotten exciting!
(Since we’re in the simulator, I think we’ll be okay, but…)
(Wait a second, is he bringing me to a battlefield?)
///
Richard: Alright, we’re here! My…it seems like the preparations are all finished.
Richard: We’ve arrived earlier than I did in reality, but…Goodness, how long have they been waiting?
—When Richard dismounted from his horse, a figure who seemed to be at the center of a group emerged, and the two exchanged friendly greetings.
—In the end, each group gave one another fruits, expensive-looking rugs, jewelry, and so on.
…A trade?
It kind of doesn’t seem like they came here to fight.
Knight: …
Townsperson: …
But, something’s off…
The people have this nervous feel to them…
///
…
I wonder if…I’ll be able to be alone with him?
Richard: Sorry to keep you waiting, Master. Now then, as I promised–
I won’t let you change the order of things!
I’ll have you eat this chocolate!
Richard: Wh–?!
Richard: Guwah–!
Richard: You–have–defeated–me–*Coughs*
This seems bad.
Richard: Ah! Stop, stop! Don’t draw your swords! This person just gave me a gift!
Richard: I’m just being eccentric like always! Don’t mind me, cease, cease! Throw it into the Gironde! [3]
Richard: It was my fault for worrying you! The blame is on me! I’ll apologize!
Richard: Good grief. Sorry about that, Master.
Richard: But, that really was quite the surprise attack. Who would’ve thought that I, whose selling point is my speed, would fall behind you.
Chocolate has to come first in the first place.
It’s just that I already received flowers here.
Richard: Jeez, you’ve got me. That’s just like you. You’re used to these exchanges, huh?
Richard: But, that was pretty close.
Richard: It’s starting, see?
—A female instrumentalist was performing with a string instrument.
—The people who had gathered there, who were probably all from different places and countries, were all listening to her performance in common with one another.
…(lose yourself in the music)
What a beautiful song…
Richard: Right?
Richard: I wanted you to hear this sound.
Richard: And, I wanted to show you this scenery.
///
Richard: That was amazing, right? Man, I could listen to it forever.
Richard: When I heard that song when I was alive, I was floored.
Richard: Both our enemies and our allies were listening with the same expressions, right?
You’re right, that nervous feeling from before is gone…
…Wait a second…enemies?
Richard: Yep. We’re still at war, so they’re enemies. That person I traded with is both an enemy and a friend.
Richard: This gathering today…It’s meant to be negotiations for a ceasefire.
Richard: During the previous negotiations, I unreasonably told the other side’s general, “The next time we talk, I want to hear that music.”
Richard: I said that even though some factions forbid music.
Richard: …But, they met my demands.
Richard: Even though this was after I stole the lives of thousands of their people.
…
Richard: They spilled plenty of blood in return.
Richard: Even so, we all gathered here believing that we could find common ground.
Richard: In spite of everything, they greeted this blood-stained self of mine.
Richard: Even though we can’t walk the same path, that doesn’t mean we have to soak the road ahead of one another with blood.
Richard: All of these grudges, this discontent, will remain here forever.
Richard: But, if only when we listen to that music, we…
Richard: Whoops, I ended up talking about some gloomy things, huh? Forget what I said. I want you to take the song and scenery from today with you.
Don’t tell me, the Lionheart King was, from the beginning…
This had nothing to do with paying me back for chocolate.
Did you just want to bring me here?
Richard: …You give me too much credit, Master.
Richard: I just didn’t know what face I should make when you gave me chocolate.
Richard: I didn’t actually think I would be able to receive any chocolate, but…For just a moment, I wondered if I deserved to receive it.
Richard: I’m a man who was always being lectured by the church, who was always told by my sister and brother that I don’t have any common sense as a human,
Richard: A man who can only wage war, after all.
Richard: But, listening to that performance made all of those doubts disappear.
Richard: Jeez, I only planned on you having fun. What’s the point in me having fun?
It was a lot of fun.
I enjoyed bringing you this chocolate.
Richard: …Haha! I see, well, we’re in the same boat, then!
Richard: Now then, since this is a rare opportunity, why don’t we have some food…
Richard: Hm? What is it?
Richard: What is it? Is there something you’d like to ask me?
Can you wait a minute, Lionheart King?
What were you talking about before?
Richard: Ah, they were asking about you. They mistakenly thought you were my retainer, so I told them the truth!
Richard: That you’re the person to whom I offer my chivalry, to whom it is only fitting that I risk my life for…the Master of Chaldea, who holds the fate of the world in my hands!
They all look crazy confused!
What did you do to the simulator NPCs?!
Richard: Well, I ordered my men not to mention it, but I couldn’t compel the negotiating party to do so!
Richard: Alright, it would be a pain to explain about Chaldea! I’m borrowing this camel for a bit!
Richard: You have my thanks for today’s performance, as well as for the words we exchanged! I leave the rest to you, my knights!
You’re too reckless!
Seriously, that’s exactly what I’m talking about…
///
Richard: Right, since we don’t get to do this often, shall we go to meet my wife Bérengère or my sister Jeanne[4]?
…
That’s exactly what I mean, you know? King Richard the Lionheart?
Richard: I’m sure they’ll be surprised if I introduce you as the Master to whom I dedicate my chivalry and I change into my spirit form!
Richard: Look forward to it, Master!
That’s exactly what I mean–!
///
Richard: …Heeey, Master?
Richard: …You’re asleep, huh? You can even fall asleep in the simulator.
Richard: Now then, I better help myself to this chocolate right away!
Richard: …Delicious.
Richard: I need to properly show my gratitude for this.
Richard: I’ll express my gratitude with the same instrument that was in your gift…
Richard: I’m sorry for my crude performance…As performer and audience, let’s treat ourselves to a concert for just the two of us.
Xu Fu: After that, they were wrapped up in a major incident in the desert, fighting demons and mysterious shark people.
Xu Fu: Was it a fault in the simulation? Or a trick played by someone?
Xu Fu: It was pandemonium involving other Heroic Spirits and took about 600 pages of manuscript paper, but–
Xu Fu: It’s a trivial story compared to the chocolate, so it can’t be helped that it was omitted! I give up–!
Xu Fu: Chaldea’s battlefield, and the Lionheart King’s battlefield.
Xu Fu: All of this happened in the moments between battles.
TL Notes:
[1]: It’s a slang term that I don’t think really has an equivalent in English. The definition of it is "someone who's skilled in some areas but unskilled in others."
[2]: An expression that refers to doing something with extreme speed and forcefulness.
[3]: A river in France, specifically in the areas Richard ruled.
[4]: The French names of Berengaria of Navarre and Joan, Queen of Sicily, Richard’s younger sister.
