Ok so I wish I could like... explain to you how white supremacy works in literature. I’ll try to be brief about this but ok...
working with descriptions within literature is v hard for me because I was v literal as a child reading books. when the text described golden brown skin I thought ok so me when I’ve got a summer tan. and as light as I am now I can’t really convey to you how much darker I was as a kid (combination of acne medication and genetics made me this light see below)
so golden brown to me meant ok
like somewhere between michelle rodriguez to priyanka chopra
here’s priyanka
And while yes it is possible for white ppl to tan that deeply... that’s not your skin color to claim. so if for example we do a really true book example when I was a kid reading the secret garden I was shocked that the movie had this little white english girl and not a little indian girl. (the book starts in india and I didn’t know what colonization was).
So white supremacy is the fact that when we’re reading white ppl imagine themselves as the default. but little brown and black kids imagine themselves and the people they grew up with.
so when jk rowling described Hermione Granger as “brown“ in HP I pictured this
that’s marsai martin btw (I’m mostly picking ppl that are easy to find via the gif finder).
I was very surprised to find this
Like I’ll give another example.
When I would see “tall dark and handsome“ I pictured someone like
not a white brown haired man!!!
anyways i’m tired and I beg of you to please not center whiteness when you’re reading.
