The screenshotted comments are so annoyingly smug and rude about it, too. 😫

The frustrating thing is, the things they're saying are almost useful for the conversation, but they're working backwards from the conclusion they want to defend ("These findings are unrelated to race.") and so keep missing things– either deliberately or through accidental bias.

First of all, there are hot vampires of many races in the film, and there are characters from many different places on the moral spectrum. The broad popularity of the trope Mafioso X Reader makes it pretty clear that people love a Smoke or Stack character when he's white.

Second of all, THIS IS THE CHARACTER TAG BREAKDOWN.

Not the shipping tags!

This isn't comparing how many X Readers each character has; it's literally how many fics INCLUDE each character. The disparity we're seeing here isn't the shipping disparity (which could easily be another conversation, because yes there are way more non-villain ships that get popular, in fandoms where there are white characters who aren't the villain). If your Remmick X Reader fic had any of the canon black characters in it, IT WOULD STILL BE INCREASING THE COUNT for their character tags!

The problem isn't that you don't want to bang Smoke or Stack. The problem is that in your brain, it's not just important that you bang Remmick; it's also important that the black characters have no role or involvement in the story. And the problem is that this is true on a wide scale.

The original poster wasn't sending personal letters to people who wrote X Reader, as much as each commenter seemed to take OP's observation as a personal slight. They were pointing to fandom-wide trends. This happens in every fandom, and these same excuses always pop up.

It's not about what you're drawn to. Literally just look at your own behavior and adjust it. That's what "doing better" is!

woc characters get put on a pedestal in their fandoms in a way that is so boring and itself kinda dehumanising. i dont just wanna hear about how they’re flawless queens, i want them to feel specific and real. and i understand why it happens, especially with younger fans, but fandom of these characters that’s oriented more around defending them from haters rather than engaging with them (beyond empty, repetitive adulation) is so… limiting and profoundly boring. you could explore these characters on their own merit instead you neglect any potential interiority, humanity, complexity in favour of letting rando haters be a hair trigger and building your faves up as impenetrable fortresses against them. and then its just girlboss with a coat of brown paint

Have ya'll heard of #DCsowhite campaign ? DC comics hasn't had a black lead comic since 2023 with I am Batman. When there is a black lead comic it's a 6 or 12 issue mini series. Right now there's Absolute Green Lantern but it's not in the main universe. So now black fans are doing a boycott of DC comics until there is a black lead comic. The boycott is called #DCBlackout.

"Ironheart was a villain origin story." How exactly? I have never understood this take. What exactly was Riri's villain plan? What does she want to do that's just so villainous? I'll never care about those jobs against some corrupt billionaires with Parker and the crew, something that we saw her question and regret. Even with that it's hardly the most evil thing ever, especially when looking around the MCU. Besides doing something "wrong" doesn't equal villain, and we've certainly seen many a character be forgiven and outright excused by some for way more than this. As for the Mephisto plot, right now we don't really know the situation with that. Will they pull a fake out, and that's not what really happened? It's certainly possible given the way the scene was filmed. We don't know if they will continue with that or just drop it. If they continue it's literally one of the oldest bargains that we have seen other heroes in the comics make, and obviously her grief was preyed upon by this powerful being. It's also obvious that even if they continue this, it won't last. I've talked about the other nitpicky talking points like her action scenes being discussed in such weird ways, or that scene with the kid who owed her, and just the homework business in general. The nitpicks and double standards are tired. Just don't like the character, and leave it at that.
