Red, Red Valentine's | Steve | Solo
Steve straightened his tie nervously once more before Tony had to bat his hands away and assure him that he looked fine. Their first Valentine's day as a couple was going to be spent at the charity gala that Stark Industries was putting on in honor of Peggy. While he knew it hadn't been for his sake or anything, knowing Tony's relation to Peggy now, it still made him nervous. He wasn't in love with Peggy anymore, but golly, did he still love her. How could he not? And of course, if she knew he was fretting over something like this, she would tell him to buck up and that it wasn't big of a deal. Still, knowing that something wasn't a big deal and actually feeling like it wasn't were two different things.
He stepped out of the limo with Tony, squinting his eyes against the bright, flashing lights of the press snapping photos. He put on his best Cap smile and waved and posed for photos until they were allowed in. He took a deep breath, resisting the urge to shove his hands in his pockets, a habit he did when he was nervous. (And God forbid someone he didn't know tried talking to him while he was flustered -- his shoulders seemed to have a mind of their own as they would start shrugging, like he didn't know what to do with them.)
About an hour into the party, after "schmoozing and boozing" as Tony sardonically had called it, he had a gut feeling that things were going to turn sour real soon here. The feeling had only been confirmed when the police barged in, claiming that they had evidence of suspicious activity, arresting guests left and right. The act got Steve seeing red, knowing full well that this wasn't the police's doing. He knew first hand when they tried arresting him (and putting a bullet in him) on account of his "criminal activities." Now, here they were, arresting innocent people for simply being there.
"Hey! What right do you have for these arrests? I don't see any wrongdoings here. Where's your evidence of the drug threat?" Steve demanded, putting on his authoritative Captain America voice.
"Sir, we're going to have to ask to you calm down," one of the police officers said, pointing a gun at him.
"Or what? You'll shoot me? Again? The local police shooting Captain America for asking questions? You getting this, Daily Bugle? That'll be your next headline," he said, saying to the reporters in the room at large. "I don't think you want to do that," he said with narrowed eyes.
(Here's the thing:
Steve didn't have his shield. They were in a room full of civilians. There were HYDRA policemen with guns. HYDRA probably would have no compunctions with firing, but the entire police force couldn't have been HYDRA, right? Because if they were, the Avengers had their work cut out for them.)
Luckily, he didn't have to see if they called him out on his bluff. No shots fired, but he did get handcuffs slapped on him. He sighed internally. Well, there's another arrest on his record, but at least he spoke out. Well, he knew some really good lawyers. He had faith in his team.
