summary:
Dean is so determined to be normal about Cas and what Cas said, so determined for things to get back to normal, that he starts counting his victories. First, he can touch Cas just like he did before--easy. He can comfort him after a nightmare--no problem. He doesn't even think about the fact that Cas is in love with him when Dean's moving around the bunker post-shower, as dressed down as he ever got before, just boxers and his robe closed over them. He's not even worried. Not even thinking twice about what Cas might see. Very natural, very cool; he can be cool about this. It's just that, along with that, he can't stop thinking about the fact that Cas is in love with him. And when they start watching that fucking schmoopy ass show with Jack, Dean can't stop thinking about that kid, Nick, and where his story's going to go. Why does it matter so much to him anyway? --- aka Dean watches Heartstopper, and it fixes him.
chapter preview:
Cas looks up at him, bleary eyed and crumpled under a blanket that's wrapped around his shoulders like a shawl. He looks like he belongs in the trashcan next to him, which is currently full of used tissues.
"Thank you, Dean," he says, sounding stuffy as shit, and he reaches for the mug, cradles it against his chest, his long fingers reaching around the mug.
Dean feels his heart squeeze. Undeniably, that's what he feels. He tries to shove it away while he sits down on the couch because now isn't the time, if there even will be a time.
Dean's still watching Cas before his brain hones in on what he's hearing coming from the television, some too-familiar synthy pop bullshit, and he looks up to find Cas watching that fucking show again.
He points at the screen. "Really? I was gone for like two seconds."
"It was over ten minutes. And I need a break from House. I feel miserable enough as it is without a show about a misanthrope moping around a hospital."
"Yeah, I guess you're moping enough for you both," Dean says, his eyes cut to Cas so he can see it when Cas flicks his eyes sideways to glare at him. "It's a good thing angels don't get sick. Or maybe you should've, and you could've spent all your time whining about it instead of starting apocalypses."
"We might've wound up starting one sooner, to get it over with." He's grousing, grumbling into his tea, but Dean can hear it: he's teasing him back, through his phenomenally good poker face.
"Why am I not surprised that angels turn out to be the biggest friggin' babies in the universe?"
Cas makes a small noise of complaint, slips a hand off his mug, and taps his temple. "Headache," he whispers, then presses his finger to his lips.
Dean's rolling his eyes already, muttering, "Lying son of a bitch," as he settles back against the couch and falls silent.
