Invitation to a Beheading my beloved
my insane phase! what a time
well I read this excerpt from the book Invitation to a Beheading randomly:
In spite of everything I loved you, and will go on loving you―on my knees, with my shoulders drawn back, showing my heels to the headsman and straining my goose neck―even then. And afterwards―perhaps most of all afterwards―I shall love you, and one day we shall have a real, all-embracing explanation, and then perhaps we shall somehow fit together, you and I, and turn ourselves in such a way that we form one pattern, and solve the puzzle.....we shall connect the points, draw the line, and you and I shall form that unique design for which I yearn.
and my brain instantly pictured Brio in this kind of scenario but was like What if Rio was the headsman? and I stored it for ages and then chapter titles started to come to me first actually.
I love titles so much that sometimes the title of a thing is the only reason I write something. So I really loved Invitation to a Beheading since the excerpt was the inspo, then the chapter title 'Bluebeard's Wife' for Part 2, what with the bloody chamber energy of the warehouse.
Then I had no idea how to finish the fic actually but then I knew I wanted Rio to say Get on all fours and then Part 3 On All Fours started to take shape.
I honestly don't know where the fucking-while-covered-in-blood with a fresh corpse next to them came from tbh. Like I know I got very drunk when I wrote Part 2 but I can't remember the inception of 'would be so sexy if they were drenched in warm blood and fucked' lol. Maybe from a 2x01 gifset where Rio is bloody. I can't recall.
I know that I cut a whole bit from Part 3, after he asks about her tattoo, about his chain being a St. Christopher pendant his mum gave him and him kinda making it clear she had passed, and I know I cut some other stuff where Beth snooped around pictures of his family. I think I wrote a small bit where she looks at the picture of his Mum and Dad on their wedding day and he got prickly about her seeing it, but while I liked it I was getting stuck and couldn’t move past it so just cut it all.

Okay, two secrets, one dull, one maybe TMI, lmao.
That bit was inspired by this clip from Friends. I didn’t realize it at the time of writing where exactly it was from, but it’s one of those weird little mannerisms that glommed onto my brain at one time or another, where Beth/Rachel are so wrapped up in their own thoughts about another man that they’re already drinking before they even realize the guy they’re sitting with tries to cheers them.
Fic association- its halfway house. Any fic of the series honestly. But also like real people do.

It's hard to tell secrets about Halfway House without giving away like a lot of plot points but here, have a heartbreaking one-liner from later in the series.
“I’m glad he - I’m glad he got this,” Steve tells Clint, and he even sounds like he means it. “This was all he ever wanted, before. A family and all that meant. He was drafted, you know. Not like me. He never wanted to fight. To kill anyone.”
“Yeah,” Clint sighs, “he never did.”

ah! look! I found one. Sort of. There's a bit in Chapter 4 where Clint references "immersive therapy" as how Natasha likes to train her partners on the fly, and it's based nearly entirely on that comedian who tells the story of being in Russia on a college trip and accidentally joining the Russian mafia and robbing the train and his fellow students.

Some deleted/rewritten scenes!
One of the first scenes I envisioned was a scene of Barb singing Seven Nation Army (in regards to Branch having worries about Trolls not liking him and her reassuring him she'd fight anyone off who did), but I had Branch reveal his trauma pretty earlier on once I started writing and Barb choosing to sing a song would have been massively out of character.
The initial plan for Branch getting his headphones from Riff actually took place in the upper bowl, and would have also been when Branch met Sid, but I changed it to the coffee scene simply because it worked better.
An earlier concept of Chapter 8 had Barb gifting Branch Bobo, but to be honest Branch wouldn't have liked Bobo so he got a new plushie. I also briefly considered the idea of Branch accidentally ripping Bobo, but to be honest Bobo is so destroyed that how could you even tell if you did rip him.
There was a scrapped concept between chapters 9 and 10 that would have had him spending time and watching wrestling on TV, but that was reworked into him watching it live during their special day.
In chapters 11/12, I briefly considered Billy being the one to find Branch on behalf of Barb, but decided to have Barb find him, have a fight with him and then send Billy in.
The nickname 'Twigs' just randomly came to me and wasn't planned, but once I came up with it I wanted to make it their thing.
In chapter 14, I was torn between laser tag and bumper cars but settled on laser tag. I'm happy I did because I don't think bumper cars would have been as special or interesting, and now Branch has a thing he's good at. I also debated who the teams should have been for awhile.
In chapter 15 Branch wasn't originally going to break the CD player, and Demo would have checked over his work, but it felt more in character to me that Branch might have a more violent reaction.
In chapter 19 there was going to be a scene where a large spray of lava was going to hit Barb and Branch, and Barb would toss Branch to Sid to keep him from getting submerged. I realized half way through writing that scene that it was too close to Branch being pushed by his grandma and would more than likely have caused Branch a panic attack, and that chapter was meant to be cute so I cut the scene entirely.
Raff's personality was initially kinda different. She was a more anxious person, with a bit of a defeatist attitude. Canonically that's what she used to be like, before she got therapy.
Branch's revelation about Cooper at one point was planned for when he met Prince D, but I moved it to coming about thanks to therapy.
I cannot stress how last minute Dickory was. Part of why I added him is because Poppy's story was actually kind of depressing without him.
Before I made the plan for the haunted house to go poorly, Branch was going to go to the carnival where there would have been yet another Spider tease.
