Porchwood, you magnificent creature. That chapter was amazing. I particularly liked Katniss getting Daddy!Peeta feels, because let's be real, who DOESN'T get Daddy!Peeta feels? Also, now I'm going to try that coffee mixture and gingerbread with goat cheese and applesauce. Finally, I really like his association with Katniss and apple trees. It's sweet and on point and very in character for both of them. Thank you for being such a wonderful writer and an even better person, dear.

Poor Katniss doesn’t stand a chance with those Daddy!Peeta feels! She literally walks into a room (read: the kitchen) and her ovaries scream “Mate with this man!!! Babies everywhere!” LOL! ;D
And I really liked ending the chapter with her dreaming mind being mildly surprised and yet content with the idea of Peeta as a mate/husband/father. (Hope you did too? :D) The nest woven from elements of him and her and them, and their two speckled eggs… <3
Her subconscious is going to be prepared for all of that LONG before her waking mind - her conscious mind is frustrated and confused by the bursts of strong feeling he evokes (jealousy, protectiveness, grief - and, of course, the thing that’s like love but not really ;D).
Let me know what you think of the coffee! I’ll probably talk more about that in a post later, but cream does WONDERS for the flavor and mouthfeel. I usually make breves with a bright Costa Rican coffee, a little clover honey, and frothed cream, but I tried blending stovetop espresso, brown sugar, nutmeg, and cream in preparation for this chapter and it was truly lovely. Definitely a combination to make Katniss rethink her opinions on coffee! :D
And let me know on the gingerbread! I haven’t tried the elements collectively but I think the creamy tang of the goat cheese would balance nicely with the dense spiced quick bread - and the applesauce (Haralson, of course :D) would round it off beautifully.
Thank you so much for your comment on the apple tree association! I had planned on an apple tree in Peeta’s garden to echo the apple tree at the Mellarks (which has its own history in my headcanon, naturally ;D), but as I got into the scene all these layers of meaning started springing up. If dandelions remind her of him, why wouldn’t something related to the incident (say, apples/apple trees) remind him of her? And it was April(ish) when she was under that tree - Katniss says herself how, the following day, “it was as if spring had come overnight.”
Can you imagine that from Peeta’s perspective?? He gives the bread to dying Katniss under the apple tree, and the next morning the tree is full of blossoms…! And as the year(s) goes on, he watches her grow healthy and thrive as the tree blossoms and greens and ripens with fruit…
