Please, hear me out!!
i just found a Peter Parker fanfic playlist (bless the YouTube algorithm fr) and now i can’t stop thinking about how amazing it would be if fanfic readings or fanfic audiobooks were more common?? like imagine if it was normal to have fics available for audio consumption or if AO3 or other fanfiction sites ever added audio options (i’m not a tech person lol pls don’t come for me on how difficult that would be, i’m just dreaming out loud pls).
anyways, here’s me pleading my case to writers and readers on why i think more people should start recording fics, or let others record them…
Accessibility!!
this would make fics sm more accessible to people with disabilities or neurodivergence or anyone with reading/focus difficulties. Even when people love fanfics it’s not always easy to sit and read them, so listening would go a long way and would reach a wider audience.
Which brings me to my next point…
Convenience!!
i was thinking about that phrase “if there’s a screen, AO3 will be seen”😂 So audiobooks/readings would just be next level, no? You don’t even need a screen, just some earphones🤭. Imagine enjoying fanfic while walking, cleaning, driving, falling asleep etc.
Giving way to more avenues of expression and art in Fandom!!
fanfic is already a creative outlet for so many writers and all kinds of artists. Why not open that space for narrators/voice actors/audio editors too? Especially with AI creeping into everything rn, including voice acting and narration, this could be such a cool and organic way for real fans and real artists to collab and get their passion back.
and the same way writers use fanfic to practice their skills, fanfic readings could be a space for narrators or voice actors to build portfolios, and try new styles, or just enjoy their hobby or passion in a community they love.
Still Anonymous & low effort!!
you don’t need a pro setup for this pls. Your phone mic, or your earphones mic could honestly be enough. And you can still stay totally anonymous, just like fic writers do. No pressure, i think. Also i think there’s so many places to post these already like youtube, and pretty much every app that allows podcasts or it could be an opportunity for our women in stem to come out with maybe a new app or solution for us lol.
PS: if you know of any good youtube channels, playlists, podcasts, creators etc please tag/link/recommend them! and if you’re a writer open to someone reading your work out loud, maybe drop a note somewhere or tag your fic? let’s make this a thing please.❤️ i think it would just be SO COOL if we had more fanfic readings and if fanfic audiobooks were just more common in our fandoms, i wish we had more of them. (This is coming from a neurodivergent fanfic writer who has a stuttering disorder, i wish i could record my own fics or help authors record theirs).
