Day 4: Spell
Fictober Day 4: Spell
Lilliane adjusted her leg, the cast annoying her greatly. “Do you want me to help you?” Jack looked up from the cards in his hand, not needing to look at them as he shuffled them between his hands. Lilliane pursed her lips as she tried to find a comfortable position to lay in. “Here, let me.” Jack stood up, setting his cards down on the coffee table as he made his way to her. He grabbed one of the free couch pillows and propped it underneath her leg. Immediately she felt better, no longer super uncomfortable, she leaned back into the couch pillows, closing her eyes with a sigh of content. Jack sat down on the sliver of couch not taken up by her legs, his eyes scanning the stark white cast. Suddenly an idea came to mind and he stood up, leaving Lilliane alone in the living room.
Jack returned momentarily, bringing with him a kit of coloured sharpies. He sat down on the couch once more, the sharpies in his lap. “I’m going to draw on your cast.” He informed her, wanting to make sure it was okay before he did. Lilliane let out a small noise, uncaring of what he did, she just wanted to nap. Jack began to draw on the cast, careful to pay attention to detail. On one side of the cast he began to draw a green heron, occasionally looking at his phone for reference. Lilliane hummed quietly as he drew, she was focused on his concentrated breathing, trying to stay awake. Darkness overcame her soon enough however, and she slipped off into a peaceful sleep, green herons cawing around her.
Jack finished the second side of the cast, a femur, tibula, and fibula were drawn on the cast where the broken bones were. “Done-” Jack looked up, noticing Lilliane had fallen asleep, her jaw slightly open as she snored. Jack capped the sharpie and put it away, he then stood, bringing the blanket over Lilliane’s body. Jack leaned down and brushed her bangs from her face, he then pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead. Lilliane stirred but ultimately didn’t wake, and he sighed a breath of relief.

Lilliane inspected her cast, looking at the detailed drawings. “These are amazing! I thought you were a magician not an artist?” Lilliane teased, looking up at her boyfriend who rolled his eyes. “Or maybe you cast a spell.” Lilliane winked at him before looking back down at the art on her leg. “Real magic exists, it’s just small things like this. Or making the best coffee, like you.” Jack gently tossed a card at her and it landed on her leg, the ace of spades. “Was this your card last Friday?” Jack asked and Lilliane snorted. “It’s always my card.” Lilliane picked up the card and threw it back at him, watching it fall flat on the ground.
“You tried, babe, you tried.” It was Jack’s turn to tease her. Jack leaned down and picked up the card, adding it to his shuffle. “No but really, these are amazingly detailed.” Lilliane smiled genuinely as she ran her fingers along the artwork. “Beautiful.” She whispered to herself as she traced the feathers of the green heron. “Not as beautiful as you my dear. The real spell here is your beauty.” Jack’s compliments caused her to blush and she did her best to hide behind her hair.
