siri play made in japan by buck owens
for Fidelity, meeting Kiku is his version of freedom. near the mid 1800s, the British swap diplomats with the Japanese, and Fidelity is the one allowed to go on his own--it's his father putting a bit of trust in him after nearly 80 years of watching him closely following the failed revolution. so Fidelity is allowed to go, meets Kiku (who is really the first Nation he meets after the revolution who isn't family, unless he meets some other europeans in brief passing between the rev and the japan visit), and just--imagine being him. being stuck under the watchful eye of your father who you have this super transactional relationship with, with only your brother for company (who you have an equally complicated relationship with) and then you get to go to beautiful japan, and meet this person who doesn't have any preconceived notions about the type of person you are. Fidelity doesn't have to pretend with Kiku. he can start over, almost, being himself, not having to hide any more than the fact that he supported a failed revolution last century.
so for him, Kiku is freedom and independence and a person he does not have to play for. Kiku doesn't know that he has this black stain on his soul, and he likely would not care if he ever found out.
this is all stuff that will be covered in the next chapter of this fic. i have not yet figured out how wwii goes for these two because i haven't gotten there yet. im also undecided on how far their relationship gets, and when. in I'm A Million Different People, Fidelity implies that he has feelings for Kiku, but doesn't state whether or not they are dating. so we will see how that goes as well :) i do think they are together by then, but it's long distance obviously, and im undecided on if Arthur knows about it.
