Fieldwork #3
I observed the first floor of the student center on Valentines day between the hours 11-12:30. There were many students coming In and out of the student center as usual. Mostly in regular winter clothing headed from one class to another. They were all bundled up in layers wearing baggy sweatpants, boots, sneakers and oversized coats. There were some who looked festive for the holiday wearing deep reds, hot pinks and even accessories like valentines day headbands and special themed makeup. There was a lot of communication amongst students because there were several organizations hosting small table events. The people hosting events were dressed up. A lot of the women wore red slacks and white blouses that were accompanied with symbols that represented their organizations. The men wore suits or either business casual attire. There were activities and games. There also was many different love/sexual related r&b songs playing at each different station, but one table had a louder speaker that drew people in and made them sing along. The music sparked people’s interest and they gathered around to see what was going on. Not only was their music attracting people, but it also was because some of their members were greeting people who walked past while handing out heart-shaped lollipops. They were able to do this because they had a lot of their members represented at the table whereas the other tables had about 1-2 people present and some were even sitting down. All of the tables were decorated in red, pink and white and had quotes concerning love on them. Most were about the relationships between a man and a woman. One table even giving out condoms. Some boards promoted self love and care and some just promoting fun and games. Overall, that one experience was truly telling about American culture on Valentines day and the subculture of HBCUs on valentines day through the use of various symbols, values, mental maps of reality, behaviors, attitudes and norms.
FieldWork #3
I decide to observe the Canteen in the Student Center here at Morgan State. I chose to observe this location because it reminded me of a high school cafeteria and how people use to group together based on social status and interest. I chose to do the observation on a Wednesday at 11am when people usually get lunch and the canteen is busy. I first noticed the layout of the area. It was a big seating area where most of the seats where in the middle of the room. These tables had room for 5-6 members and closely packed with other chairs and tables. These seating placements were obviously meant for more people to be in this area and for students to not just socialize with their table but with tables around them. Along the outside of the central area, there were individual tables with seating for 1-3 people. These are for more intimated gatherings or for people that want to eat alone. They were placed along the edges so that students wouldn’t be in the mix and that they would be left alone. There were huge wall-sized windows along half the area that let in natural light and looked out into campus. The windows really opened up the room, made it look more inviting and a pleasant place for students to eat, socialize, do work, and relax. Along the other two walls, they were painted orange, white, and Navy Blue, Morgan State colors. and covered with the Morgan State logo. Students in the area were comfortable using profanity and although it wasn’t extremely loud in the area it was at a constant volume level. Making a very loud noise brought you attention so everyone knows how loud is appropriate in the area, I wondered why the canteen was such a popular hangout spot for a lot of the students here but I then realize from the rush of students that would come in at the end of class times, that the canteen is the most convenient place to eat in between classes. It is right in between multiple dorm halls so a lot of people don't have to travel far from when they live to get food and its close enough to the campus quad where a majority of everyone’s classes take place. Because the canteen is so popular and convenient a lot of different people are in there at one time. No one group monopolizes within the canteen. It’s more of a shared space where people interact and talk to one another in an open place within the student center.
Northwoood Plaza
I chose the Northwood Plaza because what drew me towards this place is the fact there are so many industrial fixes. From the abandoned buildings to the pot holes and side walks coming up. The sidewalks at night, that I have observed, are terrible conditions and made me realize when will the community come together and do something about them. Especially walking at nights, tripping over the sidewalks because they are beaten up. Also, having soembody fix up the abandoned buildings, have somebody rent it out or even buy it. Everytime I walk to Rite Aid, I noticed alot of different kinds of people or even children walking to gas station. Some of those people are hanging around the liquor store, or just standing on the block trying to sell drugs, most of them are old heads. However, they dont seem harmful, most of them will speak to you to see how your day been going; starting up a conversation, or some might even just keep to themselves but overall they’re harmless. While I was observing, in the day time there will be a rush towards McDonalds. A long line around McDonalds drive thru. I also observed how you have cars that are parked on the side of buildings to either interact with others in their car, or just to smoke without seeming suspicious. Before I came to Baltimore, I’ve noticed how different the gas station worked from the one I go to back home in Virginia. For example, there would be broken down cars sitting on the side of the gas station, that seems to me that it hasnt been touched or moved in a while. Also, there’s this rule there that the cashier told me, you have to get items that total up to over $5 to use a debit card or credit card. Which in my personal opinion i found that interesting because I’ve never heard of experienced that type of deal or rule in a gas station. Overall, going out and observing usual sceneries, some how makes you realize that they’re unusual and I get to learn alot just by watching and seeing how everybody interact with each other, whether they are kin or strangers.
I chose to do my dorm hall lounge (O’Connell). I chose to do the lounging area because I rarely sit in the area like others. But the lounging area is a place where the guys and some outsiders come to relax, watch tv, play games , and much more. I realized that the area is set up like a theater and every chair had a little table on it. I also realized the vending machine never works. I expected to find others in the area because usually when I am not in the area it’s a lot of others there and not only resident but individuals from other dorm halls. It was a very quite place during the time, very clean, smelled normal. On weekdays there’s a lot of people in the lounge area but on weekends it’s barley people because everyone decide to go home for the weekend.
