I interviewed someone who wanted to remain anonymous. He is from Egypt. He was in the military and got to come here because he was offered a scholarship at the age of 29 to get his masters. He stayed with a host family and the shift was easy. He was taken care of. There was no culture shock because he went to the American University in Cairo. He had already known English because of this. His mother was sad because he left but his dad didn’t care. After his Masters, he was offered a job to teach while he was still on a student visa. He needed an adjustment of status. So his job applied on his behalf to change his status to a citizen. It took him years before he got approved. He had to wait 5 years to get his green card. He had to wait another 5 years to gain citizenship. He was given citizenship and has been working here successfully for years. The only adversity he faced was when 9/11 happened and he was afraid to go to his mosque and didn't want to tell anyone his name. After 4 weeks, he was back to normal. He has made a family here and has been doing well ever since.
