Within every human system exists a fundamental structural division. There is the administrator of norms and the part that acts. In other words, every psyche contains a structure akin to legislative and executive authority, an internal lawmaker and an internal worker. The legislative power, also called the dominator or superego, issues decrees; it speaks in shoulds and musts. The executive power, the compliant, is the one who acts, who performs what has been commanded.
The tension arises because our internal legislator is not originally our own. It is built from the voices of others, parents, teachers, social norms whose demands we have internalized. The executive part of us must then serve an alien authority, carrying out imperatives that do not originate within.
Yet, there is a good side. This very compulsion is what teaches autonomy. By being forced to obey others, we eventually recognize the foreignness of their commands, oppose them, and begin to treat as our own only what we have consciously accepted. Only in that reversal, the internal law of others may becomes truly ours.
