I have watched this TED talk two times now in both terms I took yoga. It was around the benefits of self compassion and vulnerability instead of self esteem. I greatly enjoy this TED talk because it reinforces that to be resilient we cannot be numb, we must feel all of the good and all of the bad that the world has to offer. It is through this we become better empathizers and more in-tune with our own needs.
I have an internship with the University Exploratory Studies Program within Academic Learning Services. This internship allows me to advise students who are still picking a path for their major during their higher education career. It is situated in Academic Affairs and is a part of Academic support services such as Academic Coaching and ALS courses like Study Skills and Career Decision Making.
The staff of University Exploratory Studies Program is only four full time professionals and one Graduate Teaching Assistant large. Luckily, the University Exploratory Studies Program also works closely with other Academic Learning Services staff as they are all situated in the left side of the first floor of Waldo Hall. The mission of University Exploratory Studies states that “The mission of the University Exploratory Studies Program is to provide academic advising and career assistance to undergraduate students, both new and transitional, who wish to investigate the educational opportunities available at Oregon State University.” UESP advising services typically advise freshman, sophomores, and the occasional junior who have not yet made a decision regarding their field of study.
I think it is interesting to compare the mission and size of Oregon State University’s UESP program with the Undergraduate Advising Program/Center of my alma mater, the University of Kansas. The mission of the Undergraduate Advising Center is: “The UAC empowers all students to take ownership of their education by providing personalized, comprehensive academic advising in a supportive environment.” This mission is similar to the UESP one but does not include career assistance like UESP does. Additionally, The Undergraduate Advising Center at the University of Kansas is equipped with a staff of twenty-seven to see students for their advising needs. To me this is a big staffing disparity between Oregon State University and the University of Kansas when both programs have similar services for similar sized institutions.
In my internship, I advised a full day for Fall 2016 weeks five through ten, a half a day in winter and a half a day in spring. I sat down with students and inquired about their engagement with school, what brought them to Oregon State and taught them how to enroll using mydegrees, and scheduler. It was a learning curve as the catalog system for advising at Oregon State University is much different than the catalog system that I use online for the University of Kansas. In some ways, Oregon State University does have a leg up on their system because you can see previous courses enrollment, teachers, and location as well as future terms plans. However, with the University of Kansas, the online catalog was easier to search.
The University Exploratory Studies Program has built a syllabus for first year advising to help encourage a consistent first year advising experience for all new Oregon State Beavers. This syllabus has students focusing on managing and learning online tools the first term, the second term had us outline the BACCORE requirements and encourage students to explore within those requirements or electives. The third term was to ask about out of class opportunities or research that has gotten the student connected to our community beyond coursework.

63 year old Incumbent Chadian President, Idriss Deby Itno, has been declared winner of the country’s presidential elections. The Electoral body said Deby won by 61.56% of votes cast. This would be his fifth term in office after he took power via a coup 26 years ago.
Mr Idriss Deby’s supporters celebrated by firing guns into the air in the central square in the capital, N’Djamena.

The emergencies that never would be
Our first rotation at the clinic was yesterday.
It was panic inducing.
No idea why, because I have literally been doing the exact thing I knew I was going to be doing all day for the last six years. It might have just been not knowing which clinician I was going to be working with.
All the groups that were assigned to the clinic yesterday showed up a little before 8:30 to round with the clinicians on what cases were in the hospital. It’s wasn’t anything super interesting, so we got through it quickly and moved on to rotation/clinician assignments.
My group got put on emergencies.
I will say two things about emergency rotations when I am on them: 1) I am not a super fan of emergency medicine, so being there makes me antsy and 2) the quickest way to guarantee that nothing will come in is to put me on the rotation. Literally every single time I have been on a shift at the clinic, not one single patient came in.
Predictably, nothing came in.
Our clinician wandered off at one point, so we kind of attached ourselves to another one and pestered her into going over a case with us. Our clinician magically appeared some time later and took over going over the case with us and, somehow, that ate away at the rest of our clinic time.
Hey, at least we got an interesting case to write up.
Holy crap, third year
Hi kids! I haven't vanished off the face of the Earth and, no, I'm not done with the tales from Nicaragua yet--I just have to deal with this whole school starting up again thing. And I'm in my third year of veterinary school. O_O Fifth term started last week and I already feel a month behind in everything. There have already been several minor disasters to deal with (our car is possessed by Satan and random objects went missing from our boxes in storage), but they have been dealt with to a satisfactory level and we're chugging along. I have my first rotation at the small animal clinic this week and my first team surgery next week. I think there's also some pregnancy checks on our cows next week or the week after, so it's game time already. So. I will try and update as often as possible and set up a queue of fabulous photos from Nicaragua and my lovely little island home away from home. (And, seriously, we still can't post pictures in text posts in the stupid app? Seriously?) Also, welcome new followers! <3
I don't even know why I'm still up.
The only reason I can come up with is that if I sleep, it will be tomorrow. And that means the following day I will have to go to school to track down my schedule so I can go back to classes.
(Classes started up again on Thursday, but I hadn't paid tuition. So I had a little more than a week off this time.)
