if  eyes  were  closed  tight  and  hands  kept  behind  ones  back  ,  the  smell  of  the  book  in  hand  would  have  been  enough  to  give  away  its  contents  .  it  was  something  aside  from  the  scent  of  mildew  and  old  pages  ;      the  smell  of  brand  new  ink  given  as  a  gift  ,  of  aging  and  being  held  in  front  of  a  class  room  for  all  eyes  to  see  ,  of  being  forgotten  and  left  to  rot  as  the  feet   of  the  dead  trudged  by  day  in  and  day  out  .  in  a  different  world  that  smiling  face  which  looked  up  at  eric  would  have  been  looked  upon  as  an  antique  worth  saving  ,  but  antiques  weren’t  worth  much in  what  had  become  his  reality  .    

solid  green  with  a  golden  fairy  lovingly  etched  on  the  cover  ,      amber  eyes  gave  the  pages  a  quick  once-over  before  handing  the  tome  off  to  the  figure  at  his  side  ,  a  simple  shrug  the  start  to  his  explanation  .      ❝      my   daughter                  you   can   make   up   the   scariest   stories   for   her   and   all   she’ll   do   is   tell   you   how   you   got   it   wrong   .   but   fairies   ?   they   freak   her   right   out   .      ❞      a  fond  smile  drifted  over  tired  features  at  the  thought  of  the  little  blonde  ,  brave  in  the  face  of  almost  anything  ,  but  with  a  natural  aversion  to  mischief  prone  woodland-beings  .      ❝      find   the   right   parent   and   they’ll   give   you   just   about   anything   for   that   book   .   hang   onto   it   .      ❞

she listens CAREFULLY  ,  trying to find the right words to comfort her friend.  stella’s known her for a long time  ,  before zombies walking among men were the norm  ,  before there had to be a reason for her name to change  ,  for her to rely so much on the crimson colored clothes.  “ i’m sorry. ”  she manages to say and it’s heartfelt  ,  because NOBODY should go through what she did.  “ what about the kid though?  i don’t remember him from our neighbourhood. ”
