CRETTO DI GIBELLINA - ALBERTO BURRI

The town of Gibellina in Sicily was flattened by an earthquake in 1968 that killed hundreds and left the small town in ruins.

The artist and sculptor Alberto Burri coated the rubble of the city in white concrete with large enough cracks to walk in, resulting in a monumental and labyrinthine landscape artwork spanning over 85,000 square meters.

Figure-Ground Tracing a line from your birthplace to mine, Turtle Lake ripples just below your shoulder blade and I follow the striation across your central plain, slowing past Reedsburg to wade the Wisconsin River. I memorize the topology of you and it is good— better, even—the long sweep of skin rising and falling as you breathe, as I name each curve of muscle, the north shore of your shoulder. Farther south ridges of your iliac crest bloom lilac. Some call this land God’s Country and when I splay my hand, thumb on La Crosse, ring finger stretching toward your scapula, I am inclined to agree.

stellanbrand: I made these prints of the spaces within a selection of Scottish castle and tower houses. The space is the ‘inverse’ of the typical poché plan that defines both the thickness of a wall and the spaces ‘carved’ within. The plans highlight the array of ancillary spaces including; stair turrets or mural (wall) staircases, wall passages or wall-walk connections, small chambers or garderobes (latrines), fireplaces and flues, arrow slits and embrasures with deep reveals, storage niches, cupboards, murder holes and escapes.
