    Being alone had it’s ups and downs (well, as alone as one could be with a tanuki child with them). Solitude had been his friend for quite some time, but having connections with a group...it had grown on him for sure. They’d all since gone their separate ways with notes to keep in touch.

    All of them had their place, even Pochi once they were ready to settle down (though no one could be good enough for his child). Utusuho is more of a wanderer, staying in one place just doesn’t appeal to him. He visits all of them now and then, staying at most a month before going back on the road again.

    Neya and Yakuma worry the most. Neya...probably because she’s a girl, Yakuma because, well, he is blind now. But like that’ll stop him!

    It’s a nice day, warm and sunny, perfect for naps. He can feel the warmth on his face, even see the hazy outline of Pochi’s tail laying on his nose, but nothing beyond that. “Hmmm...think Yakuma misses us? Maybe we should go see him!”

“Mmmmm...Utsuho-san...” Rui groans, growing more irritated with the other boy by the day, really. At first he thought it was nice; to not be the only child in his latest foster home. (This must be number ten by his count, he’s so sick of being bounced around why don’t any of them LOVE HIM?!)

But this fox-eyed boy is just annoying, especially with all his LIES! “Where are my sewing needles?! I know...yes I KNOW you took them! Stop lying! Or I’ll...I’ll...I’ll...” Hah, he’ll WHAT?! Swing feebly at Utsuho until he collapses from an asthma attack? Chase him until he passes out due to his anemia? Try to get back at the other boy and accidentally expose himself to one of his allergies?

“...” Wow, he really is that pathetic, isn’t he?

Rui pauses in his tracks, just staring down the other boy in concern and wariness. Not a slayer, not a sword to be seen on his person. But that doesn’t mean that he’s harmless. He reaches up to show that his hands are covered by gloves and pulls the hood of his stolen cloak down more.

.....Ah yes, his height. One of the banes of his existence. Become a demon, he said, you’ll get healthy, he said. Yeah well, where’s all those extra inches of height that come with being healthy?! ‘Bastard bastard bastard bastard...’

“No,” Rui answers bluntly, hoping that his deep voice will dispel any notion that he’s a kid. “my parents are dead.” And probably cursing his existence so thank you for that reminder, random stranger.

An evening at a real, private bathhouse is a rare thing for Hana. So rare, in fact, that when Kanon had suggested it, she’d assumed he meant he was going off himself, only learning it was actually an invitation a couple minutes before they were on their way there. Together.

The place was modest: only one large, main public bath and the handful of small, private ones separated from it by rock walls. A string of paper lanterns hangs over the water, reflections dancing over the water’s surface and glowing brighter as the sky grows darker. Hana doesn’t know exactly how much a private bath costs, but she can only imagine Kanon had spent a small fortune to get them one. As she settles into the water, it is with a small sigh, the hot water a pleasant feeling on her tired and calloused skin. She’s been in natural hotsprings before, but never one one maintained and kept clean and scented by an owner. After a moment, Hana blinks her eyes open to see Kanon sitting across the way from her, oddly distant for the one who’d asked her here.

“You know, you don’t have to sit so far away.” Whether it’s an offhanded comment or an invitation to move closer is hard to tell. Either way, she stands up and wades over to a bucket and sponge to wash herself off a bit more thoroughly.

“What do I say? Is ‘thanks’ okay? What about -insert however you say ‘thank you’ in primordial here-?”

“H-hey there...”

This is crazy. He knows what time it is in Japan, and it’s not one he should be calling Utsuho at. In fact, if they were in person, he’d probably be yelling at Utsuho for being up at this hour.

But they’re not in person. They haven’t really seen each other for months. Doing a year of medical school overseas at the most prestigious Dutch hospital had sounded like a great idea when he was applying to and got accepted by the program. It was a great opportunity, but he hadn’t accounted for being more on his own than he was used to by the time he left.

“I’m sorry for calling so late. Rotations ran way over...” He isn’t sure why he’s whispering. He lives here alone. Maybe it’s for the cat that’s been sleeping on his windowsill lately. “I couldn’t get home until now. I....” What did he even call to say, he wonders. But he won’t find an answer; he didn’t call to say anything. He had no interesting news, no stories. He just wanted to talk to Utsuho, who was quiet and probably understandably groggy. “I, uh, guess I ought to let you sleep. Call me in the morning?”
